Second-Half Rally Spurs Mustangs By Field Hockey

Box Score
YORK, Pa.—Brittany Hawkins (Hampstead, N.H.) scored the first goal of the game, but Stevenson University scored four unanswered goals to beat Gordon Field Hockey in the conclusion of the York Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Hawkins tried to kick-start the Gordon offense in the early going after the Scots failed to score a goal in their season opener against York on Friday. With the Fighting Scots missing their leading scorer from a season ago—Courtney Scott (Herndon, Pa.) is temporarily out due to injury—Hawkins looked to pick up the slack. In the 28th minute, Hawkins wrapped a shot inside the post from the top of the arch.

Gordon's first goal of the season would be short-lived, as Stevenson forward Caitlin Dempsey finished a deflected shot for the equalizer just two minutes later. The Fighting Scots and Mustangs went to the halftime break tied at one goal apiece.

The Mustangs got their offense going in second half with two goals within a minute of each other by Rosemarie Neiva and Holli Eppley—both unassisted. Alison Kagel added a fourth straight goal for Stevenson in the 49th minute, but Gordon was unable to answer over the final 20 minutes of play.

Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) had another good day in goal for the Fighting Scots, making eight saves in a full game of work, but took her second loss of the season. The Fighting Scots were outshot by the Mustangs 15-9, but 12 of Stevenson's attempts were on goal in comparison to only four by Gordon.

Gordon will look to get things back on track on Tuesday when they travel to Salem State for a North Shore Cup matchup beginning at 6 p.m.
