Engineers Score Early to Down Fighting Scots, 3-1

Box Score
WENHAM, Mass.—Visiting MIT used three goals in the first 15 minutes of the game to pace themselves over Gordon Field Hockey in non-conference action at the Brigham turf. Freshman Emily Penn (Elkridge, Md.) scored just two minutes following the opening whistle to pace the Engineers to a 3-1 win over the Fighting Scots on Tuesday evening.

Penn's presence in the middle of MIT's penalty corner attack was a big one, as the freshman totaled two goals in the first 12 minutes of the game. Senior Caitlin Mackey (San Diego, Calif.) assisted on both goals, using passes from the top of the shooting arch to find Penn's finishing touch by the net. The visitors capped the scoring with just under 20 minutes left in the half when freshman Dana Balek (Boxford, Mass.) redirected a pass from junior Molly McNamara (Auburn, Mass.).

The Fighting Scots had several chances to get on the scoreboard in the later stages of the first 35 minutes however, junior goalie Evie Kyritsis (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) stopped the threat each time. Twice in the final few minutes of the period, Gordon just missed a touch on two open nets to ensure MIT would entire halftime with a 3-0 lead.

Gordon's defense held strong in the second half despite five shots, as sophomore Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) came up with seven saves against MIT's powerful offense. Kyritsis had three saves to earn her third win of the season for the Engineers.

Freshman Alyssa Doucett (Barrington, N.H.) finished off a Karli Weiss (Perkasie, Pa.) pass for the Fighting Scots only score in the 67th minute.

Gordon opens up its CCC schedule at Salve Regina on Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m.
