PK Sinks Beacons in Overtime

Box Score
WENHAM, Mass.—Senior Andy Guthrie (Beaver Falls, Pa.) buried a game-winning penalty kick with just over two minutes remaining in the first overtime to send the Fighting Scots to their fourth straight win to begin the season. Visiting UMass-Boston scored the equalizing goal with just five minutes left on the clock in regulation, but the Fighting Scots outshot the Beacons 3-0 in the overtime period to pull out the 2-1 win.

Fresh off its win at the Husson Challenge Cup, Gordon Men's Soccer returned home with one of its toughest non-conference matchups against UMass-Boston. The Beacons boasted a talented offensive coming into the contest, but neither dynamic attack found any space in the early portion of the first half.

The first shot off the half for either team happened in the 22nd minute when Caleb Cole (Coatesville, Pa.) ripped home his second goal of the season off Josh Cochran's (Bellville, Ohio) feed. Cochran set up the game-winner in the game-winning goal in the championship game over the weekend. Cole's strike was the only shot on goal for either squad in the first period.

The Beacons (1-3) flipped the script on Gordon's dominant possession from the first half by using a variety of aggressive counters in the second. UMass-Boston only had one shot in the first half, but managed eight in the second half of regulation, including a barrage of attempts on net in the final 10 minutes. Two shots from Paul Erne (San Diego, Calif.) were pushed wide by the Gordon defense, but the Fighting Scots couldn't hold onto their lead long enough. Edmilson Barros (Praia, Cape Verde) and Gordon defender Kristian Kasiguran (Oakwood Village, Ohio) both got to a cross at the same time, but Barros was able to push it just enough to have the ball trickle into the left corner of the goal.

Gordon returned to its role as the aggressor in the second half, equaling their shot totals from regulation time in a matter of seven minutes. The Fighting Scots first two shot were stopped on beautiful saves by Alfonso Rosales (Revere, Mass.), but a hard foul in the box gave Guthrie the chance to win it. The senior calmly stepped up to the stripe and pushed a shot to the right side, as Rosales dove to the other side, to claim Gordon's second straight win over the Beacons. Each keeper made two saves in the game.

The Fighting Scots (4-0) return to the pitch on Saturday for their Commonwealth Coast Conference opener at home against Wentworth. Wentworth has had strange luck so far in 2014, tying all three of its games thus far.
