Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Late Rally Pushes UNE Past Fighting Scots

WENHAM, Mass.—Two quick scores late in regulation spurred visiting University of New England Field Hockey to a 2-0 win over Gordon in Commonwealth Coast Conference play. Sophomores Brooke Marshall (Bow, N.H.) and Desirae LeBlanc (Manchester, N.H.) broke a scoreless tie with only 13 minutes remaining in the game, after Gordon's offense had held strong for a majority of the contest.

In a showdown of the two teams in the 2013 CCC Championships game, UNE flexed its muscles with powerful attack. Gordon has learned to play defensive battles in the wake of missing All-American Courtney Scott (Herndon, Pa.) for beginning of the season due to injury. The Fighting Scots have bunkered down well on defense, outside of tough matchup with nationally ranked Wellesley early in the season. However, UNE's offense would give Gordon's defensive front one of its toughest tests to date.

The Nor'easters (4-1, 2-0 CCC) registered the first nine shots of the game, outshooting the Fighting Scots 8-0 in the first half, but Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) displayed poise between the pipes. Four times in the first half, Hicks made a tough save on an excellent scoring opportunity to keep her team from trailing early.

Gordon's (3-5, 1-1 CCC) first chance came a few minutes into the second half and it would amount to its best opportunity of the game. Karli Weiss (Perkasie, Pa.) raced past her defender down the right side of the field and sent one across the goal line. Holly Smith (Peabody, Mass.) was able to make the initial save for the Nor'Easters, but the ball got sent back out of play. Gordon kept the pressure up and Katherine Bailey (Baltimore, Md.) chipped a ball that looked destined for the box, but instead it nicked the post and out of bounds.

UNE turned the brief scare into a scoring chance on the other end, but Lydia Ellsworth (West Chester, Pa.) came up with the defensive save. Not to be rejected UNE threatened again off the following penalty corner by LeBlanc, an unassisted attempt tucked behind Hicks at the near side to break the scoreless tie. Less than two minutes later in the 57th minute, Marshall added her first goal of the season after an initial save by Hicks. The sophomore forward was able to knock home a 50-50 ball in front of the goal to give the Nor'easters some insurance.

Brittany Hawkins (Hampstead, N.H.) had two great scoring chances in the final minutes, but Smith knocked each shot away to preserve the shutout. She made three saves for her fourth victory of the season. Hicks made 10 saves in the loss. UNE outshot Gordon 19-4, with all of the Fighting Scots attempts coming in the second period.

The Fighting Scots are back in action on Saturday with another home conference game against Roger Williams. UNE returns home to take on Salve Regina on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
