Scots Overcome Halftime Deficit for North Shore Cup Win

Box Score SALEM, Mass. —Two second-half goals spurred a Gordon rally, overcoming a one-goal deficit at halftime to notch the Fighting Scots' first win of the season at Alumni Field. Goalkeeper Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) denied Viking forward Kelsey Russell (Arlington, Mass.) on a penalty shot late in the second half to uphold a 2-1 Gordon College win.

Midway through the first, Hicks made a diving save to keep the game scoreless, but minutes later Katie Pietrini (Beverly, Mass.) put the Vikings atop 1-0 on a pass from Alanis Tirabassi (Attleboro, Mass.) in a scrum in front of the net. Salem State exited the half with a 1-0 lead with help from goalkeeper Carolyn Woodin (Arlington, Mass.), who stopped two Gordon shots late in the half.

The Fighting Scots offense was sparked early in the second half with two quick goals from Brittany Hawkins (Hampstead, NH) and Emily Allcroft (Haydenville, Mass.). Hawkins scored her second goal of the season in the 39th minute off a feed from fellow senior Karli Weiss (Perkasie, Pa.). Allcroft scored her first collegiate goal just three minutes later to give the Fighting Scots the lead for good.

With just under ten minutes to play, Russell received a penalty shot opportunity after a Gordon penalty, but was stopped with a great save from Hicks.

Hicks made three saves in the win while her counterpart Woodin also stopped three. The Vikings held a slight 8-6 advantage in shots, but the Scots timeliness in the second half proved to be the difference in the contest.

The Vikings travel to Endicott College to take on the Gulls at 4:00 p.m. on September 4th. Gordon hosts the Huskies of Southern Maine on Thursday September 4th at 7:00 p.m.
