BIDDEFORD, Maine—Goals from seniors Andy Guthrie (Beaver Falls, Pa.) and Evan Crocker (Akron, Ohio) in the early parts of the second half were enough to keep Gordon College unbeaten on the year, as the Fighting Scots topped the University of New England, 2-0, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon (Sep. 20) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
Neither side had many scoring chances in the opening frame, but the Fighting Scots pushed forward in the closing stanza and Guthrie converted a penalty kick in the 50th minute to put the visitors in front. The score was Guthrie's second score off of a penalty kick opportunity this season after he scored the golden goal against UMass-Boston two weeks ago.
The margin doubled just a few ticks later in the 59th minute, as sophomore Daniel Perez (Billerica, Mass.) connected with Crocker streaking down the left wing. Crocker squeezed a shot past the Aidan McParland (Brockville, Ontario) for his second goal of the season.
Junior Bruce Gerberich (Fredericksburg, Pa.) of Gordon and UNE senior McParland each recorded three saves on the day. The Fighting Scots finished with comfortable advantages in shots (13-5) and corner kicks (10-1) after 90 minutes. Gerberich earned the first win of his career filling in for the injured Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.) and pitched the shutout.
Gordon moves to 7-0 in 2014, with a 2-0 ledger in conference games. The Nor'easters dip back to 3-2-1 overall (0-2 CCC) with the defeat. Gordon hits the road on Tuesday (4 p.m.) to face Eastern Connecticut State University in a non-league match. The Nor'easters are back on the field the same day and time for a visit to Bowdoin College.
