BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Seniors Hannah Midwinter (Barkhamsted, Conn.) and Taylor McSherry (Wolcott, Conn.) each tallied a goal and assist in the 2nd half to lift Gordon College to a 2-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's soccer victory over the University of New England on Saturday afternoon (Sep. 20) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
Â
The Fighting Scots improve to 6-2 on the season (2-0 CCC), while the Nor'easters suffer their first setback of year back to 5-1 (1-1 CCC). Despite getting outshot in both halves, Gordon's offensive punch in the second half proved to be the difference in the final third of the game.
Â
Fresh off an upset of Endicott this week, UNE looked to do the same to last season's runner-ups at home. The Nor'easters immediately pressed their attack on the Gordon defense, but the unit led by junior McKenzie Dion (North Grafton, Mass.) was able to keep the opposition out of the net. Gordon and UNE traded scoring opportunities well into the first half, but neither was able to make good use of the chances.
Â
After a scoreless opening period, Gordon looked to amp up the pressure at the beginning of the second half. Kara Dry (Madison, Conn.) and Jamie Breton (Concord, N.H.) each found space for good chances early in the second period, but Brielle Robinson (Monson, Mass.) was sharp in between the pipes to keep the score at zero with diving saves. Gordon finally struck in the 63rd minute when McSherry found her classmate down the right side, and Midwinter bounced a low shot off a defender and up over the goalie.
Â
The visitors absorbed the UNE pressure and added an insurance goal in the 89th minute to seal the win. This time it was Midwinter hit McSherry in stride down the left wing and the forward slotted a low shot just inside the near post.
Â
Dion picked up her sixth win of the season by making five saves and earning the clean sheet. Robinson stopped six Gordon shots in the loss.
Â
Gordon returns home for the first time in 11 days on Wednesday for a non-conference matchup with New England College, beginning at 4 p.m.
