Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Golden Bears Set Back Scots 3-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—A high-powered attack led the Western New England University women's volleyball team to a 25-9, 25-12, 25-18 victory Wednesday evening over visiting Gordon College in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both squads. The Fighting Scots found their rhythm offensively in the final set, but it was a little too late to mount a comeback.

The Golden Bears improve to 4-1 in the friendly confines of the Alumni Healthful Living Center field house and 12-4 overall, while the Fighting Scots slip to 7-7 on the season. Gordon started the season 7-3, but has suffered four straight defeats to drop to .500 on the year.

Jessica Burdick (Brewerton, N.Y.) led Gordon with six kills and a .333 attack percentage, Joy Kimmel (Madison, Conn.) dished 14 assists, and Maggie Risma (Hudson, Ohio) recorded eight digs on defense.

Western New England got off to fast start in the opening frame thanks to an efficient offense and solid defense. The Golden Bears hit .556 as a team on 11 kills in 18 total attacks with just one error while holding Gordon to a minus-.087 clip. Western New England would never look back after that, leading wire-to-wire except for five ties and one lead change in the third set.

Seniors Kendra Ouimette and Grace Kucharski paced WNE's strong service game that produced 15 aces. Ouimette had five to push her career total to 231, which is tied for fourth in school history with Samantha Shomo (2007-10). Kucharski had four and now has 219 in her career. Senior Kasey Cameron had a match-best nine kills while hitting for a .409 clip, while junior Olivia Lathrop and freshman Carly Skibinski each added six kills.

For the match, WNE had twice as many kills (30) than Gordon (16), which hit .000 on the night. The Golden Bears connected for a .268 percentage.

Gordon is back on the road on Saturday with another tough CCC matchup against North Shore rival Endicott at 2 p.m.
