Box Score WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon senior Karli Weiss (Perkasie, Pa.) scored with six minutes remaining in the first half and the Fighting Scots were able to shutdown the Huskies of Southern Maine for a 1-0 win in non-conference field hockey action at the Brigham Athletic Complex.
Playing their fourth game in six days, Gordon (2-2) was keen on playing a possession game against a dynamic Huskies' offense. The strategy of control and defense worked well from the outset, as the Fighting Scots milked the clock until a good scoring opportunity presented itself. The first scoring chance came in the eighth minute when Weiss struck a shot just inside the scoring arch, but it was kicked away by USM keeper Amanda Kasbohm (York, Maine). The Fighting Scots had another prime opportunity two minutes later on a poke by Katherine Bailey (Baltimore, Md.), but the shot went just outside the goal posts to keep the game scoreless.
Part of the Fighting Scots' strategy was to keep the ball away from USM midfielder Peyton Dostie (Standish, Maine). Dostie only had one goal coming into the contest, but had accounted for nearly 75-percent of the Huskies attempts in the their first two games. The senior had two chances at a score in the middle of the first half, but a huge defensive save by Lydia Ellsworth (West Chester, Pa.) kept the Huskies out of the net.
The first goal of the game came with exactly six minutes remaining on the clock when Weiss took an inside feed from Bailey for the score. Gordon took the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Southern Maine (1-2) came out of halftime with a different focus on offense, possessing control of the pace of play well into the second stanza. Three consecutive penalty corners between 48:00 and 51:00 on the clock yielded several good shots, but Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) made two diving saves and Ellsworth came up with her second defensive save of the game.
The Fighting Scots were able to wind the clock down, holding the Huskies to only one shot in the final 20 minutes of the game. The two teams were even with 13 shots each, but Gordon held the slight 6-5 advantage with shots on goal. Each keeper made six saves, but Hicks did enough to earn her second win of the season.
Gordon is back in action on Saturday when they travel to Wellesley for a matchup with the Blue. The Huskies have a six-day break before traveling to Maine-Farmington on Wednesday.
