Box Score WELLESLEY, Mass.—Wellesley Field Hockey found a recipe for success early in a non-conference contest with Gordon, rumbling to a 7-0 in in front of the home crowd. The Fighting Scots were stuck in their defensive half for a majority of the game and couldn't recover from a 5-0 halftime deficit to fall to 2-3 on the season.
The hosts scored early and often, building a 5-0 lead in the first half. Courtney Peterson got things started for the Blue, while Alex Azzi scored a pair of first half goals. Nathalie Gruet and Nikki Sharkin also found the back of the cage in the first stanza.
Wellesley added two more in the second half, as goals from Mary Lemay and Hannah Flesch set the final to 7-0 Blue. Wellesley's nationally-touted program has now out-scored its opponents 17-0 in a pair of games this season. The Blue have also built up a 74-1 advantage in shots in 2014, allowing just one opponent attempt this season.
Gordon had a pair of breakaway opportunities in the second half, but was unable to get off a shot. The Blue ended the game outshooting the Scots, 23-0, while holding a 17-0 advantage in corners. Azzi's two goals led the Blue, while Flesch and Peterson each added two-point games.
In goal for Gordon, Shannon Hicks made 10 saves in the loss. For the Blue, Lucy Hurlock and Becky Hamilton split time in the shutout.
The game concludes an exhausting pace of contests—five in eight days—for a team down two of its senior leaders due to injury. The Fighting Scots hope to get healthier before the conference matchups begin next week.
Wellesley is back in action tomorrow at Bridgewater State, traveling to play the Bears in a 1:00 p.m. game. The Fighting Scots will look to rebound on Tuesday when they play host to MIT at 5:30 p.m.
