Bilbie Serves Up Game-Winner in OT Thriller at Husson

Box Score
BANGOR, Maine—Freshman Nathan Bilbie (Shrewsbury, Pa.) beat Husson keeper Brian Potter to the inside post just three minutes into the first overtime period to lift Gordon to a 2-1 win over the host school. The Fighting Scots completed a second-half comeback with Biblie's strike to win the Husson Challenge Cup for the second consecutive year.

Husson took the lead just two minutes into the contest when Josh Bean (Ellsworth, Maine) threw the ball in and Phil Frost (Bangor, Maine) made a nice sliding effort to put the ball in the back of the net. Gordon was a bit taken aback by the early score and it took awhile for their possession-heavy approach to take hold in the pouring rain.

The hosts had several good scoring opportunities in the first half, outshooting the Fighting Scots 8-6, but neither team could score for the final 43 minutes of the period.

Gordon began to wear down the Eagles at the outset of the second half, lurking in its offensive half until the right opportunity presented itself. Caleb Cole (Coatesville, Pa.) sent the first shot of the second half just wide of the goal, but received a second chance just two minutes later in the 56th minute. Cole got loose in the middle of the field and ripped a shot across the goal for the equalizer.

The Fighting Scots continued to pressure Potter (Waterville, Maine) and the Eagles' defensive unit, peppering them with 12 second-half shots. Joshua Cochran (Bellville, Ohio) looked like he would be the hero in the 72nd minute when he ripped a shot from 30-yards out that quickly sunk toward the goal. The shot pinged off the crossbar straight down and Potter was able to rescue the ball from danger with a quick flick.

Potter kept his cool despite the barrage of shots toward his goal and made four saves in the second period to send the game into overtime. Gordon quickly wrangled away possession in the overtime period, where Cochran screamed a pass up the seam of the field to a wide-open Bilbie.

Bilbie took two touches with the ball to size up the approaching Potter and placed a perfect ball in the lower right corner for the game-winning goal.

Following the match, Bilbie was named the Husson Challenge Cup Most Valuable Player. Andy Guthrie (Beaver Falls, Pa.), Kristian Kasiguran (Oakwood Village, Ohio) and Cole were named to the All-Tournament Team. Also named All-Tournament were: Husson's Bean, Nic Pare (Keene, NH) and Michael Curtis (Ellsworth, ME); Maine Maritime's David Lord, Evan Turmenne and Gabriel Warren; and Southern Maine's Charles Mull and Tyler Rand.

Gordon improves to 3-0 on the young season and they return home for a tough matchup with UMass-Boston on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
