WENHAM, Mass.—Endicott Men's Basketball broke a five-game losing streak against Gordon, beating the Fighting Scots 68-61 on the road. The two teams went back and forth the entire game, but the Gulls free-throw shooting in the final minutes allowed them to pull away for the seven-point win. John Henault (Lunenburg, Mass.) scored a team-high 18 points for the winners despite just eight attempts from the floor, while Hans Miersma (Whitinsville, Mass.) turned in a double-double performance in the loss.
The Gulls improve to 13-5 (9-2 CCC) on the season and the Fighting Scots fall to 7-11 (4-7 CCC) with the loss. Gordon has dropped five of its last seven games and is 1-7 at the Bennett Center this season.
Once again, the rivalry between the Gulls and Scots did not disappoint. The first half saw five lead changes and seven ties, while the two teams struggled to gain control. Both squads found success on the offensive end, an important point of emphasis for the Fighting Scots after a frustrating effort against Wentworth on Thursday.
Trailing by one at the midway point of the first half, Dominic Paradis (Rochester, N.H.) and Carter Bras (Coppell, Texas) hit back-to-back treys to give the hosts a four-point advantage. Richie Armand (Hempstead, N.Y.) extended Gordon's largest lead of the game to seven just a minute later when Endicott made a run of its own.
The Gulls outscored the Fighting Scots by nine points for the remaining 10 minutes of the first period, including a fadeaway 15-footer by Max Motroni (West Warwick, R.I.) as time expired in the half. Endicott led Gordon 35-33 at the break with no player scoring in double figures.
A seesaw battle ensued after the halftime whistle. Endicott extended its lead to seven early in the half, but Gordon scrapped back to draw within a point with 7:22 to play in regulation. However, the Fighting Scots were never able to get the lead back in their favor despite several opportunities to do so. Kamahl Walker (Worcester, Mass.) struggled from the field in the first half, but scored 12 in the second to keep the Endicott offense chugging along.
Free throws ended up as the defining factor of the second half with the two teams shooting drastically different marks. Endicott converted 12 of their 15 shots at the charity stripe, while Gordon missed five of its eight attempts in the period.
Henault was quietly solid all night for the Gulls with 18 points, three assists and two steals in 35 minutes. Walker's second-half streak gave him 13 for the game and Daquan Sampson (Germantown, Md.) came up with 10 points. Endicott only turned the ball over nine times in the game.
Gordon was led by Miersma's 20-point, 12-rebound night. The senior also picked up a block, a steal and two assists. Paradis was the only other Scot in double figures with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Jaren Yang (San Francisco, Calif.) and Taylor Bajema (Whitinsville, Mass.) each had eight points as well. The Fighting Scots had a double-digit rebounder for the sixth straight game and continue to outrebound their opponents—holding a 41-36 advantage over the Gulls.
Endicott hosts Salve Regina at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, while Gordon travels to Springfield for a tip with Western New England.
