WENHAM, Mass.—A triple by Western New England guard Sammie Battaiani with 16 seconds remaining completed a double-digit comeback for the Golden Bears over the Fighting Scots. Gordon surprised Western New England with a 30-17 halftime lead, but the Golden Bears outscored the Scots by 15 in the second half to take a 49-47 victory.
Both teams came out firing on all cylinders, with the Golden Bears taking the early 11-10 lead. A four-minute scoring drought allowed the Scots to counter with five straight points to take their first lead of the game at 15-11. After the game was knotted at 17 apiece with 4:08 remaining in the first period, Gordon ended the half with 13-0 run to take control of the game.
Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) and Mariel Barner (Colorado Springs, Colo.) were major factors in the Scots bid at an upset with 20 combined points in the first half. Gordon outrebounded the Golden Bears 17-13 in the period as well.
The second half was a different story as the Golden Bears quickly trimmed a 13-point disadvantage to just three minutes in under five minutes of game play. Western New England was eventually able to take its first lead in over 20 minutes of play at 35-34 with 13:18 left on the clock.
Instead of buckling under the pressure, Gordon never wavered in its attempt to retake control of the game. Their persistence gave way to another run in their favor to re-establish a six-point lead with just under eight to play.
However, Gordon was unable to notch a single point in the final six minutes of the game. Despite the scoring drought, the Fighting Scots held a one-point lead with under a minute to go when Battaiani drained a deep three on a designed play from the right side.
The Fighting Scots looked to catch a break in the final seconds when Mariel Barner was tripped up at the top of the key. A call was waved off and Gordon dropped the heartbreaker to the Golden Bears.
Emily Anderson had a solid game off the bench and led Western New England with 10 points. After a tough shooting performance in the first half, Chelsea Vujs finished with nine points and eight rebounds. Battiani also had nine points, including the game-winner.
Barner and Kratche led all scorers with 14 points. Olivia Vetere (Mahopac, N.Y.) also had a standout game with 10 points and six assists. Freshman Sophie Linnell (Richmond, Va.) put forth another double-digit rebound performance with 12.
Gordon is back in action on Thursday when they travel to take on Curry at 5:30 p.m.
