Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Monks Walk Off Scots with Golden Goal

WENHAM, Mass.—Saint Joseph's (Maine) freshman Kara Kelly (York, Maine) ended a scoreless tie four minutes into a second overtime period to hand Gordon Field Hockey a 1-0 loss. The Monks ended Gordon's three-game winning streak and dropped them to 5-9 overall, while Saint Joseph's ran its record to 9-4.

Both defense's had stellar games, but the Monks put more pressure on Gordon across the board. After a fairly quiet first half where the two teams only combined for five shots, the Monks and Scots totaled 16 in the second 35-minute period.

Luckily for the Scots, Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) was on top of her game with 15 saves in almost 89 minutes of play.  Saint Joseph's slapped 12 shots in the second half, but Hicks continued to turn ball after ball away from danger.

Gordon's offense was able to spread out more in the 7-vs-7 overtime period and outshot the Monks 6-3 during the first set of extra time. The Scots looked to have prime opportunity as time was dwindling down in overtime, but a pass went just wide to the left and no one was able to get a stick on the ball.

The speedy Michalia Parent (Westborough, Mass.) got loose behind the Gordon defense at the start of the second overtime period. Parent skipped a pass over a defender's stick and Kelly was able to curl a shot around Hicks to effectively end the game.

Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) made five saves for the Monks to record her seventh win of the year.

The Monks stay on the road this weekend when they travel down to Lasell. Gordon hosts Western New England on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
