Volleyball Handles Nighthawks, Wins Seventh Straight

WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Volleyball strung its seventh consecutive win together with a gritty 3-1 victory over non-conference Newbury College on Tuesday night at the Bennett Center.

Nothing came easy for the Fighting Scots as the Nighthawks came out swinging from the opening serve. Newbury led early in each of the first two sets, but Gordon was able to come from behind to get the first game in its pocket.

An attack led by Courtney Banks (Corona, Calif.) and Maya Umoren (Qunicy, Mass.) gave Gordon trouble in the early going. The Nighthawks looked to have the first set nearly wrapped up at 20-15, when Gordon made a big run. Gordon won six straight points to take a one-point advantage and fended off the Nighthawks on four of the next six points to win 25-22.

Newbury grabbed a three-point led at the midway point of the second set, 17-14, when Gordon made another small run. Jess Burdick (Brewerton, N.Y.) and Carleigh Petersen (North Hills, Calif.) both registered kills to knot the game back up. However, the Scots could only muster three points the rest of the way as Umoren got hot down the stretch to close out a 25-20 victory.

Gordon looked more ready for the Nighthawks attack in the third and fourth frames. Both times, Gordon broke open a close set with a long run to finish off the vistors.

Banks led all offensive players with 13 kills and had a solid .220 hitting percentage for the Nighthawks. Marlen Reynoso (Springdale, Ark.) put up 32 assists, while libero Julia Leggett (Longview, Wash.) saved the ball 22 times to lead the team in digs. Umoren had an even game with eight kills and four total blocks.

Jenna Labbadia (Berlin, Conn.) had one the best games of her career with 12 kills and only one attack error. Petersen was not far behind with 11 kills, while Mackenzie Hinds (Higganum, Conn.) kept her pace with nine. Renee Cooprider (Hopkinton, Mass.) set up 38 kills and Maggie Risma (Hudson, Ohio) grabbed a game-high 24 digs.

Newbury (13-8) heads to NECC foe Lesley on Thursday evening, while Gordon (16-8) hosts another non-conference team, Colby, on Friday evening.
