WENHAM, Mass.—Freshman
Josh Beveridge (Anchorage, Alaska) scored his first collegiate goal in the 101
st minute to fend UNE off from an upset bid. The rookie beat the keeper in a one-on-one battle to end a scoreless tie between the two teams and helped the Scots keep pace with the top teams in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.
Gordon improves to 11-3 this season and 6-1 in the conference, while UNE falls to 3-14 and 0-7 respectively.
The Fighting Scots had to fight off a defensive look they have become accustomed to over the course of 2015. Gordon outshot the Nor'easters 21-4 in the game and 7-0 on goal, but they struggled to get through the packed in defensive unit.
Gordon's best two opportunities at getting on the board in the first half were both rejected by the rim of the goal. Beveridge looked to have his first career goal in the 20
th minute when he toe poked a cross. However he got too much on the ball and it hit the bottom of the crossbar and was kicked away from danger by a UNE defender.
Caleb Cole (Coatesville, Pa.) scorched a shot in the 36
th minute that beat Jake Rostkowski (Rockport, Mass.), but it pinged off the post and out of play.
The Scots continued to pressure in the second half, but again came up empty handed. Rostkowki and the UNE defense came up with several key stops in the second frame when it looked like the Scots had sure goals.
UNE had a fast break go awry late in the first overtime period as
Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.) came off his post to protect the goal. Gordon then countered with a corner with 10 seconds left in overtime and nearly scored. Cole sent a perfect ball into the fray and
Tyler Modzeleski (Cazenovia, N.Y.) got a good touch, but a UNE defender deflected it out at the last second.
Gordon made quick work of the second overtime by running the ball down into its offensive zone immediately following the tip. The Scots eventually worked the ball into Modzeleski, who was able to squeeze a ball through two defenders towards the goal. Beveridge ran in from the left side and beat Rostkowski in a foot race before finishing for the winner.
UNE will look to bounce back against Eastern Nazarene on Saturday in Biddeford. Gordon hopes to continue its winning ways in the CCC when it travels to Rhode Island to take on Roger Williams.
