BEVERLY, Mass.—Gordon Men's Soccer dropped its second Commonwealth Coast Conference game of the season, losing 1-0 to top-seeded Endicott in the regular season finale for both teams. The Gulls' Diego Maillo (Plantation, Fla.) headed a cross from Diego Slobotzky (Mexico City, Mexico) in the 84
th minute to clinch the regular season title for the hosts.
With the win, Endicott moved to 13-1-3 overall and 8-0-1 in the CCC, while Gordon fell to 12-4 and 7-2 in conference play.
The first half started slow with neither team getting much going, but intensity soon picked up as Gordon outshot the Gulls 10-7 in the scoreless first stanza.
Caleb Cole (Coatesville, Pa.) nearly put Gordon on the board in the 22
nd minute when he sent a screamer toward the bottom right corner, but Nick Weinstein (Trumbull, Conn.) was there for the diving save.
Both teams traded prime opportunities from inside the 18-yard box early in the second half. Cole and
Torrey Stricklin (Warwick, R.I.) both had good lucks that were deflected away by Weinstein.
Senior midfielder Shintaroh Itoh (Nerima, Tokyo, Japan) nearly put Endicott on top with a header of his own in the 50th minute, but junior goalkeeper
Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.) made a diving stop in the nick of time.
In the 81
st minute,
Evan Crocker (Akron, Ohio) collected a loose ball and beat two defenders into the seam of the field. Crocker launched a shot that dipped from its original trajectory, but sailed just over the crossbar. Two minutes later Cole sent another low shot that looked good off the foot, but was pushed just to the right of the post.
Endicott countered directly after, which led to the eventual game-winner 45 seconds later.
Gordon entered the day with an opportunity for the top seed still in play, but Western New England's big win over Curry ended that possibility. A win over Endicott would have ensured the No. 2 seed, but a loss sent them down to third in the CCC.
The Fighting Scots will host No. 6 Roger Williams on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Gordon beat Roger Williams 2-0 in Bristol, R.I. last Saturday.
