Nor'easters Spoil Season Finale in OT

WENHAM, Mass.—Desirae LeBlanc (Manchester, N.H) scored 42 seconds into overtime to give UNE a 2-1 win over Gordon in Commonwealth Coast Conference field hockey action on a rainy Wednesday night at the Brigham Athletic Complex.

The victory improves the Nor'easters to 10-1 in the CCC and sets up a showdown for the top seed on Saturday with Salve Regina. UNE improves its overall ledger to 13-6 for the year. Gordon falls to 5-14 and 3-9 respectively.

A scoreless first half was dominated by the Gordon defense, as they fended off 11 shot attempts by the Nor'easters, including eight on frame. Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) was at her usual sharpness and stopped all eight shots on goal in the first half.

UNE ended any threat of a scoreless regulation period early in the second half. Vonde Saunders (Conway, N.H.) picked up her 12th goal of the season when classmate Hannah Buckley (Leominster, Mass.) found her with a pass inside the crease. Saunders split Gordon defenders and past the boot of Hicks for the first strike of the game.

The Nor'easters continued to press the Gordon defense for an insurance goal, but it never came as Hicks stayed steadfast in goal. A couple of early counters did not provide a result for the Fighting Scots, but a prime opportunity in the 61st minute finally paid off.

Collette Newcombe (Rowley, Mass.) sent a penalty corner to the top of the crease and got the ball back at the near from Marirose Brown (Melrose, Mass.). Newcombe was able to power a shot past Holly Smith (Peabody, Mass.) for the equalizer with eight minutes and change on the clock.

UNE had two good chances to take the game in regulation at the very end, but Gordon was able to hold them off to force an overtime period.

The Nor'easters collected a turnover off the opening tip and LeBlanc ran all the way down the field from right to left. The junior midfielder had the ball tipped away by a Gordon defender, but he regained possession and sent a drive to the low corner on the left side of the net. Hicks backtracked from stopping the fast break, but the shot trickled to the outside of her foot and into the goal.

UNE outshot the Fighting Scots 24-7 for the game and 18-5 on goal. Hicks made 15 big saves for the hosts to keep the game within reach, while Smith stopped four attempts.
