LANCASTER, Pa.—Gordon Men's Soccer saw its season come to a close in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Sunday evening. Franklin Marshall scored early in both halves to put the Fighting Scots in a big hole and Gordon was not able to claw all the way out in a 3-1 loss.
Gordon closes its season at 16-5 on the season, while Franklin & Marshall moves on to the Sweet 16 in a matchup with undefeated Calvin. They improve to 17-3 in 2015 and outscored opponents 8-2 in two tournament games on their own turf.
The Diplomats leading scorer this season, Chase TenBrook (Millville, N.J.), got his team on the scoreboard just three and a half minutes into the opening period. Gordon was unable to clear the initial penetration into the box and TenBrook faked out his defender before slicing a ball underneath the reach of
Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.).
Franklin & Marshall outshot the Scots 10-5 in the opening half, but Gordon settled into a groove after allowing the initial goal. The Scots controlled pace for a good portion of the first half and created several dangerous chances, but could not pull the trigger on the equalizer.
The early stages of the second half got hairy for the Scots, as a tackle in the box led to a penalty kick for the host Diplomats. A red card was also issued against the Scots on the play, putting them at a further disadvantage moving forward. Jeremy Levine (Flemington, N.J.) converted the penalty kick to put the top-seeded team in the pod up by two.
Franklin & Marshall made took advantage of being a player up just two minutes later. Janse Schermerhorn (Burlington, N.C.) received a threaded pass from Dave Martin (Wilmington, Del.) and tucked one past the keeper for the 3-0 lead.
Gordon countered quickly the other way when
Josh Beveridge (Anchorage, Alaska) scored in the 60
th minute in a nice flick to the left side. However, Gordon was unable to tempt fate once again.
Spoonhour made seven saves for the Fighting Scots.
The loss marks the first time they had allowed three goals in a game this season and the first loss the Scots have suffered by more than one goal since the NCAA tournament in 2013.
