SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Gordon Men's Soccer avenged a regular season loss by beating second-seeded Western New England by three goals on Tuesday afternoon at Suprenant Field. The Fighting Scots flexed its defensive might to shutout the Golden Bears for the second time in their last five meetings, including back-to-back 3-0 wins in Springfield.
The Scots move on to the Commonwealth Coast Conference championship game, where they await the winner of Tuesday's matchups between Endicott and Wentworth. Western New England ends the season at 11-8 despite possessing an 8-1 mark in the CCC.
After almost being eliminated in the first round against Roger Williams, Gordon did not take much time to get on the scoreboard in the semifinals.
Danny Nkhalamba (Concord, N.H.) got loose along the end line and sent a left-footed cross right to the forehead of
Evan Crocker (Akron, Ohio). WNE keeper Kevin Strobel (Rockland, Mass.) had no chance at the header and Gordon took the 1-0 advantage in the 25
th minute.
The Fighting Scots took a 1-0 lead into the second half, when
Tyler Modzeleski (Cazenovia, N.Y.) added some more pressure to the Golden Bears. Modzeleski beat his mark on the break and tucked a ball inside the left post for the two-goal lead.
Western New England had a prime opportunity in the 69
th minute when Nick Liccardi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) was left wide open at the top of the 18-yard box. Liccardi ripped a shot that curled up just enough to ping off the crossbar and out of play.
Gordon broke the game wide open in the 78
th minute. Crocker and Modzeleski both put rips on frame that were stopped by Strobel, but a desperate flick attempt from Modzeleski found
Ian Burkhart (Lancaster, Pa.) running in from the right side. Burkhart one-timed it into the right corner of the net to give the Plaid a comfortable 3-0 cushion.
The Golden Bears had two last looks in the waning minutes, but could not break through the Gordon defense.
Strobel had four saves for Western New England and allowed three goals or more for only the fourth time in 2015.
Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.) was sharp in net for the Scots, making six saves in 86 minutes.
