WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.—Gordon Men's Basketball shook off a slow start to their Pennsylvania trip and bested host Penn College 84-78 on Friday night. Freshman
Garrisson Duvivier (Brockton, Mass.) had a monster game with 27 points, 15 rebounds, four assists and three blocks to lead Gordon back from 12 points down in the first half.
Gordon snaps a two-game skid with the victory and gets back to .500 at 4-4. It also marks the first time the Scots have won on the road this season, as they were 0-4 coming into Friday. Penn College falls for the first time in three games and drops to 2-5 this season.
The Gordon offense was sluggish at best to begin the night and turnovers played a role in the Scots lack of rhythm. Backed by the high-scoring effort from point guard Marquis Delgado, the Wildcats stormed out to a 28-16 lead over the first 13 minutes of the opening half. Penn College shot well from behind the arch in the first half—6-for-11—which also helped build the double-digit advantage.
Gordon began to work its offense late in the first half and found success getting into the middle of the Penn zone. The Scots outscored the Wildcats 14-3 in just a three-minute span. The Wildcats bounced their lead back to three points at the break, 35-32.
The momentum from the end of the first half carried over into the second. Gordon looked like a completely different team coming out of intermission and finally overtook the lead for the first time since 9-7 when sophomore
Dylan Marshall (Purcellville, Va.) hit a three from the extended wing. The triple helped kick start what ended up as a 26-5 run for the Fighting Scots in a seven-minute stretch.
Penn College refused to go away despite a 16-point deficit. Delgado scored a career-high 30 points and was a sharpshooter down the stretch to cut Gordon's lead all the way down to a single possession with just under a minute to go.
However, Duvivier closed the door on the rally with an old fashioned three-point play on Gordon's final possession.
The Scots will have a stiff test on Saturday when they face Lycoming (5-2) on short rest at 3 p.m.
For the Scots- Duvivier's became the second player to score more than 20 points this season with his dynamic effort. He is only the second Scot to register 20+ points, 15+ rebounds and three blocks over the last 15 years. Hans Miersma being the other. Duvivier is the only with 25+ points in such a game.
- Gordon raised its season rebound margin to 7.1 with a plus-21 rebound effort on Friday. They lead Wentworth by 6.4 rebounds per game for best in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.
- Sam Johnson (Chatham, Mass.) had 12 points and seven rebounds in 21 minutes.
- Gordon's bench scored a season-high 29 points in the game with Jake Haar (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Luke Meyer (Patchogue, N.Y) leading the way with nine points each. Marshall finished with six.
