WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Men's Basketball broke a two-game losing streak on Wednesday evening, beating Western New England 73-62 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference debut for both squads. The Scots broke open a close game with a 14-5 run over the final six minutes and change to move to 3-2 this season. Western New England falls to 1-4.
A fast-paced first half lent itself to plenty of scoring in the early going as Gordon built up a quick 12-4 advantage over the opening five minutes. Western New England never allowed the Fighting Scots to extend their lead beyond that point despite several opportunities for Gordon to do just that.
Trailing 21-13 with nine minutes to go in the first, Western New England began to attack the paint consistently down the stretch. Mikey Petway (Bridgeport, Conn.) led the Golden Bears on an 11-0 stretch over the course of four minutes with a drive-and-kick approach. Petway scored six points during the spurt.
After Gordon tied the game at 24 apiece, the Golden Bears received big three-point makes by Mike Gelineau (Waltham, Mass.) and Don Stephens (West Palm Beach, Fla.) on back-to-back trips down the floor.
The Golden Bears held a 37-32 advantage with under a minute to go in the first when Gordon's three ball started to sink. Freshman
Noah Szilagyi (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) hit one in the corner before
Jaren Yang (San Francisco, Calif.) dropped runner before time expired to give Gordon a 38-37 lead at half.
Gordon quickly built up a six-point lead at the start of the second half, but the Golden Bears refused to go away quietly. The Fighting Scots had their lead eventually trimmed to nothing when a jumper by Tyler Johnson (Vernon, Conn.) made it 49-49 with 14:29 to go in regulation.
However, Gordon had just enough to keep Western New England at bay for the remainder of the contest. The Golden Bears never led in the final period.
