Scots Fall to Golden Bears in Conference Opener

WENHAM, Mass.—Led by an efficient night from senior forward Chelsea Vujs (Berlin, Conn.) Western New England spoiled the Commonwealth Coast Conference home opener for the Gordon Fighting Scots. Vujs led a three-headed attack with 18 points in 25 minutes and helped the Golden Bears to a 75-45 triumph over host Gordon at the Bennett Center on Wednesday.

Western New England (3-3, 1-0 CCC) outscored the Fighting Scots in every period, including a hot start in the opening quarter. After falling behind by three points over the first five minutes, Western New England outpaced Gordon 17-5 in just a four-minute span to take a 25-16 lead into the second period.

Gordon showcased some streaky play in the second period by scoring the first eight points to pull back within a point. However, Western New England tallied the final 12 points of the half to open a 37-24 advantage after 20 minutes.

The Fighting Scots hit a pair of threes in the third period, but could not get closer than 12 points the rest of the way. Western New England controlled the third with a 22-6 run and limited Gordon's streaks in the final period to cap off a big victory.

The Visitors
  • Vujs had her most efficient night of her senior season by shooting 63.6% from the floor.
  • Forward Emily Anderson (Rocky Hill, Conn.) was 2-for-10 on threes heading into the night and made two against the Scots. She finished with 12 points.
  • Sophomore guard Dorothy O'Neill (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a standout night with 13 points and six dishes. Her six assists matches a season-high.

The Scots
  • Freshman Jamie Tafoya (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Kristen Smith (Littleton, Mass.) tied for the team lead with 12 points. Tafoya has led the Scots in scoring in three of the last four games and has scored in double-figures in four games thus far.
  • Smith had a season-high five assists and led the team in the category for the second time this season.

Gordon (3-3, 0-1 CCC) will look to break a three-game losing streak on Saturday when they head to Bristol, R.I. to take on Roger Williams.
