Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Golden Bears Outpace Fighting Scots 62-38

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Gordon Women's Basketball suffered a tough loss on the road against the hottest team in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, Western New England. The Golden Bears controlled the game after the opening five minutes and clamped down on Gordon's offense for the big victory, 62-38. Gordon falls to 3-16 on the season and 1-11 in the CCC.

After a slow start, the Golden Bears found their stride with a combination of Samantha McCann and Emily Anderson. The two post players combined to go 9-of-15 in the first half and 18 points to outscore the Fighting Scots by themselves in the first half. Six different Gordon players scored in the first half, but no one had more than three, as the Scots fell behind 33-14 at the break.

The Golden Bears made nearly 50-percent of their shots from the field in the first half, while attempting 13 more shots than their nemesis. WNE's seven offensive boards gave them a 19-13 advantage in rebounds as well.

Western New England opened a lead as large as 33 points in the second half, but Gordon fought off the tough start and played much better in the final period. After shooting under 30-percent in the first half, the Fighting Scots made 43-percent of their shots from the floor in the second. Sophie Linnell (Richmond, Va.) scored a team-high nine points, seven of which came in the final 20 minutes.

Four Gordon players finished with at least five rebounds, led by Mariel Barner (Colorado Springs, Colo.) with six. Linnell also thieved three passes which was a game-high for either squad.

Gordon returns to action on Thursday for a rematch with Nichols at 5:30 p.m. The Bison bested the Fighting Scots 55-50 at the Bennett Center back in December.
