GEORGETOWN, Texas—Led by junior
Jessica Castelline's (Concord, Mass.) five-goal explosion, Gordon fought off a solid offensive showing from host Southwestern University to secure a 15-11 win. The Fighting Scots improved to .500 on the season with the victory and complete a perfect spring break trip to Texas.
Gordon opened the contest with three goals in the first five and a half minutes and seemed to have the game under control until Courtney Ragland took matters into her own hands with three goals and one assist in the next ten minutes to pull SU within two, 6-4, with 14:12 to play in the first.
Breanna Jobb's unassisted goal, her second of the game and season, evened the score 6-6 with just under ten minutes to play. Southwestern took the lead with 5:03 remaining on a free position goal by Allison Cook. Gordon's
Kristin Fitzgerald (Groveland, Mass.) snuck one home with less than a minute on the clock to send the game into the break tied 7-7.
The teams traded goals throughout the first six minutes, but GC closed the game on a 6-2 run to hand Southwestern the loss.
The Pirates had four fewer shots, 26-22, and three fewer ground balls 44-41. Gordon won 18 of the 28 draw controls and converted on three of five free position shots while SU went just five for ten.
Southwestern (4-4) was led by Ragland with four goals and one assist. Adrienne Dodd had an outstanding game defensively with seven ground balls and four caused turnovers. Jordan Little suffered the loss with seven saves on the evening.
Fitzgerald scored her first two goals of the season in the contest, while
Abby Illian (Hillsdale, N.J.),
Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass.) and
MC Aston (Greenwich, N.Y.) all added two scores as well. Grinnell and Castelline combined for six assists on the day, as the junior duo continue to pile up big stats for the Gordon offense.
Caroline Walton (Irvine, Calif.) picked up seven ground balls and classmate Fitzgerald grabbed a team-high of nine. Castelline won a game-high seven draw controls.
The Pirates remain at home to face Puget Sound on March 20th at 6 p.m. The Fighting Scots (2-2) return to the snowy confines of the Brigham Athletic Complex a week from Tuesday to take on Emerson at 7 p.m.
