Engineers Construct Mid-Game Run, Survive Gordon Rally

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Roger Evans (Oxford, Pa.) scored Gordon's first three goals of the game and four overall, but the Fighting Scots couldn't overcome a second-half deficit in a 12-8 loss at MIT. The Engineers used a 12-1 run in the middle of the game to counter a fast start by the Fighting Scots and survived a late run to beat Gordon in a non-conference matchup.

The Fighting Scots found an offensive rhythm right out of the shoot with Evans providing the steady hand. The junior attacker scored on an assist from Matt Dantona (Syosset, N.Y.) just a minute and half into the opening quarter. Gordon won the impending faceoff and Evans struck for gold again just 30 seconds later for the quick 2-0 lead.

MIT answered back at the 10:03 mark of the first quarter with a power-play goal by Graham Davis (Crofton, Md.) aided by Harris Stolzenberg's (Weston, Fla.) pass. Evans gave himself a hat-trick in just eight minutes of gameplay with another unassisted strike with 7:04 to play in the first quarter, giving Gordon its two-goal lead back.

However, MIT scored twice in the final minute of the period to change the momentum of the game in an instant. Things got better for the Engineers in the second quarter, scoring all four goals of the period to cap a 6-1 run entering halftime and taking a 7-3 lead after two quarters.

After dominating the offensive possession in the first quarter, Gordon was outshot 17-4 in the second period to put Cody Greenwald (Albany, N.Y.) in a tough spot. The junior made six big stops in the second quarter, but couldn't keep the Engineers scoreless while the Scots struggled on the offensive end.

The two teams traded goals in the third quarter to keep things manageable for the Fighting Scots entering the final 15 minutes. MIT ended any thoughts of the comeback from Gordon by scoring the first four goals of the final period to put the Scots down 12-4. Jake Martin (Watertown, Conn.), Ryan Utz (Rochester, N.Y.) and Evans combined for four goals in the final five minutes to make things closer.

Major stats were comparable between the two squads, separated by only a few marks in shots on goal and turnovers. Gordon also dominated faceoffs and ground balls. However a scoring outage during the heart of the game hurt Gordon for the second time in the last three games, getting only one goal in the middle 45 minutes of game play.

Greenwald made 14 saves for Gordon in the losing decision and Jordan Heckelmann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) picked up a team-high two assists. Davis had a hat-trick for the Engineers and Stolzenberg dished out four assists. Eric Bartell (San Diego, Calif.)  blocked 16 shots and improved to 5-0 on the season.

Gordon (3-5) begins Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Saturday at Wentworth at 3 p.m.
