SALEM, Mass.—
Bailey Grinnell's (South Hamilton, Mass.) scored six goals in a game for the second time in as many tries as the Fighting Scots of Gordon College sailed past the Vikings of Salem State, 18-4 on Monday afternoon at Alumni Field. The win improves Gordon's record to 4-3 on the season while the Vikings draw their first loss of the season and slip to 4-1.
The Fighting Scots controlled the majority of the draw control that allowed their high-paced attack to outshoot the Vikings 25-8 in the first half. Gordon's midfielders
Jessica Castelline (Concord, Mass.) and Grinnell led the Fighting Scots on a 10-0 run where they put 17 shots on Salem State goalie Chyenne Jackson (Peabody, Mass.).
During the run Castelline and Grinnell tallied four goals apiece while
Abby Illian (Hillside, N.J.) and
Caroline Walton (Irvine, Calif.) added individual goals. Gordon also scored three times on free positions during that stretch that gave the Fighting Scots a 10-0 edge at the 10-minute mark.
Salem State got on the scoreboard when Courtney Smith (Peabody, Mass.) put the ball top shelf past Gordon net-minder
Jackie Kieman (Lexington, Mass.) for the Vikings first goal of the contest. However, Gordon was able to add one more before the half as Walton scored to give the Fighting Scots a commanding 11-1 halftime advantage.
Gordon's dominance continued in the second half as their defense held the Vikings to one goal as the Fighting Scots added to their large margin. Throughout the first 20 minutes in the second half, Gordon added a 6-1 run that pushed their lead to 17-2, forcing a Salem State timeout. During the run, Grinnell added two goals while Castelline, Walton, and
Hannah Schilke (Westerly, R.I.) contributed with goals of their own. With just under four minutes the Fighting Scots tallied one more goal by
Blake Orndorff (Churchville, Md.). Despite the large deficit the Vikings scored twice before the final horn, but their late scoring would not be enough, as Gordon would earn the 18-4 victory.
Jackson stopped 10 shots for the Vikings while Kieman and
Zita Nagel (Wayland, Mass.) combined for three saves. Grinnell also had a strong game in the draw control circle, coming up with six during the contest. Illian and
Lindsey Congdon (Exeter, N.H.) wrangled in four ground balls each to lead the Scots.
Salem State will travel to Curry College on March 25th to take on the Colonels at 4:00 p.m. The Fighting Scots will host Salve Regina University on March 25th at 4:00 p.m.
