Arning Gem Lifts Gordon to Split with Rival Endicott

WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Baseball handed Endicott its first Commonwealth Coast Conference of the season in game two of a doubleheader split between the rival schools. The Gulls smashed their way to a 13-0 win in game one before the Scots rebounded in nightcap with a 4-1 victory thanks to Wes Arning's (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) complete game effort. Gordon beat the Gulls for the first time in nine matchups dating back to 2011.

Game One

Endicott figured out the Gordon pitching staff in the first of two games at J Tec White Field on Saturday afternoon. The Gulls put together 13 hits and 13 runs against the Gordon staff en route to a dominant 13-0 effort.

After a quiet first inning, Endicott put their first two runs on the board in the top of the second. Anthony Serina (Portsmouth, R.I.) walked to lead off the inning before being ushered to second on a hit-by-pitch taken by Matthew Paola (Middlebury, Conn.). Nicholas De Lotta (Southbury, Conn.) moved the two base runners to second and third with a perfect sacrifice bunt down the first-base line. A bad bounce on a wild pitch by Gordon starter Mark Fitzgerald (Camarillo, Calif.) allowed both runners to score.

Gordon put together three hits in the bottom of the third, but could not find a RBI knock to cut Endicott's lead.

The Gulls added two more to their total in the fourth inning with four consecutive hits to start the inning. De Lotto and Josh Drew (Intervale, N.H.) singled and double to put two in scoring position. Cody Hall (Rutland, Mass.) brought both runners home with a single, growing the Gulls' lead to four.

Endicott broke the game open in the next frame with four more runs. Michael DeDonato (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Harry Oringer (Dartmouth, Mass.) walked to begin the inning before Mike Kochiss (Fairfield, Conn.) launched a rocket over the outfield wall for a three-run homer. Drew eventually drove Serina on a single later in the inning.

The Gulls pinned more runs to the scoreboard in the sixth to put the game out of reach officially. Luke Morse (Westford, Mass.) improved to 2-2 on the year, while allowing only four hits. Gehrig Schilling (Medfield, Mass.) pitched one inning of relief for the Gulls. Gordon's Fitzgerald took the loss while giving up seven earned runs over four innings of work.

Game Two

After a marathon in the first game, game two went by in a breeze. All four of Gordon's runs came in the bottom of the second inning after a costly error by the Endicott third baseman.
Alonzo Martinez (El Paso, Texas) reached second when a grounder went under the glove of Kochiss down the third-base line. Travis Pullen (Las Vegas, Nev.) walked before Endicott pitcher Owen Bautze (Sudbury, Mass.) was able to force Jesse Amaya (South Gate, Calif.) in an infield fly for the second out of the inning.

Dean Demers (Sandy Hook, Conn.) brought Martinez around to score and put Pullen on third. Jeremy Jackson (Waco, Texas) was able to beat out a dribble to second base to bring home Pullen for a 2-0 lead. Freshman Addison Tarr (Oxnard, Calif.) singled to right field to score Demers from third base with ease. An errant throw in allowed the speedy Jackson to score from first base, but the catcher threw out Tarr trying to advance to third on the play.

Serina singled and eventually scored on a passed ball in the fourth inning, but that was the only run Gordon starter, Arning, would allow.

Arning became Gordon's all-time leader in wins by scattering four hits and a walk over seven innings. Bautze took the loss in three and two-third innings.

Endicott draws to 15-8 overall and 9-1 in the CCC. The Gulls play at home against Western New England tomorrow at noon. Gordon improves to 6-11 overall and 4-2 in the conference—they host Wentworth at home on Monday at 2 p.m.
