Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Second Half Magic Continues to Send Scots to Semis

WENHAM, Mass.—For the second time in four days, Gordon Women's Lacrosse squeaked by visiting UNE thanks to a second half run. Junior Jessie Castelline (Concord, Mass.) scored four goals and added two assists to lead the Scots, while MC Aston (Greenwich, N.Y.) broke a 10-10 tie with 3:01 remaining in regulation for the game-winner. Commonwealth Coast Conference first-teamer Gina Newsome (Danbury, Conn.) scored four times for the Nor'easters in the narrow 11-10 loss.

The Nor'easters close out the season with a record of 7-10, while Gordon improves to 11-7 and has now won four consecutive games.

Castelline opened the scoring in the fourth minute after she picked up a loose ball right in front of the net and scooped it past Courtney Kendall (Waltham, Mass.).

Not unlike the first meeting between the two teams the Nor'easters fired back with four straight goals, including three within 45 seconds of each other. Jocelyn Davee (Freeport, Maine) tabbed the first UNE on a pass from Brooke Kelleher (Exeter, N.H.) before Newsome added two quick goals of her own to make it 3-1.

Five minutes passed before UNE found the net again, a free-position goal by Newsome that she bounced past Jackie Kiernan (Lexington, Mass.).

Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass.) attempted to jump start Gordon's quiet offense in the 16th minute with an unassisted goal off an initial save by Kendall. Second team All-CCC attacker, Castelline, cut the Nor'easter lead to one goal when she finished off another unassisted play just seven minutes later.

Rachel Schwaner (Holderness, N.H.) scored UNE's second free-position goal of the game with less than three minutes to play in the first half, her 22nd of the year.

Both teams struggled to get any consistent offense going due to turnovers in the midfield. The two squads combined for 28 turnovers and 14-22 clears during the first 30 minutes, but UNE held a 5-3 lead.

Castelline completed her hat trick three minutes into the second half on a free-position attempt, her 64th of the year. The gap was widened less than a minute later when Newsome took the ball in herself following a draw control win. Jessica Deedon (Sherman, Conn.) moved UNE's to three goals at the 35-minute point with another unassisted score.

Gordon's offense kicked into another gear with 22:57 left in regulation. Castelline assisted a goal for Aston before scoring herself to close the gap to one once again. Grinnell drew the two teams even for the first time since early in the first half after taking it down the field by herself.

Abby Illian (Hillsdale, N.J.) helped the Scots reclaim the advantage with 19:49 to go when she finished off a lob pass from Castelline to the left of the net.
After a six-minute battle that included saves on both ends of the field, Illian and Grinnell both scored in a 30-second span to increase the Scot lead to three goals at 10-7.

The Nor'easters were far from giving in to a little adversity, as Kelleher broke the 15-minute scoring drought with a goal in the 49th minute. Schwaner brought UNE one step closer with a free-position goal with 8:36 remaining in regulation and Warren knotted things up at 10 with another free-position score. The Nor'easters were 4-of-7 on free-position attempts during the game.

Gordon controlled possession for much of the next three minutes, but Kendall held strong with two saves during the stretch. Aston finally broke through the barrier with 3:01 on the scoreboard on a pass from Caroline Walton (Irvine, Calif.). Aston snuck up to the left of the next on a free-position setup and Walton sent an easy pass across the face of the goal for Aston to tap in.

Kendall made 11 saves in taking the loss, while Kiernan stopped six shots to get the victory.

The Fighting Scots held off the Nor'easters for the final three minutes to earn a date with Western New England on Wednesday. The Golden Bears went undefeated in the CCC this season and are 14-2 overall, while earning a regional ranking.
