WENHAM, Mass.—The Gordon Baseball team closed out its 2015 regular season with an 8-2 win over visiting Newbury on Tuesday afternoon at J. Tec White Field. The Fighting Scots scored six runs between the sixth and seventh innings to break open a 2-2 game. Gordon improves to 15-17-1, while Newbury falls to 17-20 this season.
The offenses were quiet over the first few innings, as the pitching staffs settled in. Billy Stephen (Windermere, Fla.) pitched 5.1 innings for the Nighthawks, while Gordon got through the game with a whole staff approach.
Gordon came up with the first hit of the game in the fourth inning. After
Travis Pullen (Las Vegas, Nev.) walked with one out in the inning,
Alex Smith (Wethersfield, Conn.) launched a ball to straight away center for a double. Pullen came all the way around from first and scored underneath the tag at the plate.
Jesse Amaya (South Gate, Calif.) gave the Scots a 2-0 lead with a two-out single up the middle of the diamond to score Smith, who was running on contact.
Newbury evened the game in the fifth inning as the Nighthawks got to reliever
Sam Johnson (Chatham, Mass.). Ian Hruniak (Lutz, Fla.) singled to lead off the inning and subsequently stole second. Brian Rhone (North Haven, Conn.) came up with Newbury's second straight hit to escort Hruniak to third.
A wild pitch by Johnson allowed Hruniak to make it home easily and Rhone scooted all the way to third. Rhode crossed the plate two plays later on a fielder's choice to tie the game at two. Johnson was able to get the final two batters of the inning to eliminate any further damage.
The Fighting Scots took their lead back in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Dean Demers (Sandy Hook, Conn.) walked to start the inning before advancing to third on a Smith single.
Mark Fitzgerald (Camarillo, Calif.) smacked a double to the left-field fence to score Demers and put Smith 90 feet away from home. Amaya brought Smith home on the next play.
Gordon doubled its score in the seventh inning, capped off by a 3-RBI inside the park home run by Smith.
Stephen was credited with his second loss of the season for the Nighthawks, while
Ryan Block (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) earned his first win of the year in one inning of relief. Block struck out two of the three batters he faced.
Smith went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and two extra-base hits. Senior
Jared Kefalas (Wenham, Mass.) and freshman catcher
Jon Sensi (Bordentown, N.J.) each picked up two hits.
Newbury continues its season against UMass-Dartmouth on Saturday, while Gordon travels to Curry for the Commonwealth Coast Conference playoff opener on Thursday at 3 p.m.
