Martin Disrupts Colonels' Cadence with Late Goal

MILTON, Mass. – Junior Jake Martin (Watertown, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal with less than a minute on the scoreboard in a 9-8 win over Curry College  on Tuesday evening at the Walter M. Katz Field.  The Colonels fell to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, while the Scots improved to 5-8 and 2-3 in the conference.
 
Senior Ronald Jensen and sophomore John McMenomey led the Colonels with two goals apiece. Freshman Jeffery Yates contributed a goal and two assist in the loss. Freshman Matt Serra, sophomore Brandon Flaim and freshman Cole Franklin each contributed a goal for the Colonels.
 
Junior Ryan Utz (Rochester, N.Y.) tallied four goals in the win for the Fighting Scots. Martin had led the Scots in the assist column with three in the game as well as adding a goal. Junior Michael Utz (Rochester, N.Y.) recorded three points with two goals an assist.
 
Gordon was first to get on the board at 14:15 on a goal from Ryan Utz assisted by Michael Utz. Gordon added a second goal at 11:34 from freshman Owenn Geis (Santa Ana, Calif.) assisted from freshman Nico Manganiello (Peabody, Mass.). Curry responded with two unassisted goals from Franklin and Flaim as the first period ended at a 2-2 tied.
 
The Colonels would take the lead at 11:45 of the second period with a gola from McMenomey assisted from Yates. The Fighting Scots responded with three unanswered goals. Two from Ryan Utz, including a man-up goal as well as a man-down goal from Michael Utz with just six seconds left in the first half to give the Fighting Scots a 5-3 lead heading into halftime.
 
The Colonels would tie the game in the third period with two goals coming in the first seven minutes of the period from freshman Matt Serra and Jensen. The Fighting Scots would take back the lead with just over a minute left in the third period when Michael Utz netted his second goal of the game.
 
Curry would start the final period with two goals in the first two minutes from Yates and Jensen. Gordon responded with the tying goal, being a man-up from Ryan Utz with less than 9 minutes remaining in the game. Curry would take the lead back at 6:53 of the fourth with an unassisted goal from McMenomey. Gordon would answer with a goal from senior Jordan Heckelmann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) to even the game, 8-8. With 55 seconds remaining in the game, Martin netted his first goal of the game. That would be the game-winner for the Fighting Scots as the game ended 9-8 in favor of Gordon.
 
Curry outshot Gordon 40-39 while Gordon held a groundball advantage, 26-24. The Colonels went 9-21 on face-offs and 14-20 on clears. The Fighting Scots was successful on 11 of 14 clears and won 12 out of the 21 face-offs.
 
Curry's sophomore goaltender Shane O'Brien 16 saves while allowing 9 goals in the game. Gordon's junior goaltender Cody Greenwald (Albany, N.Y.) turned away 14 shots and allowed 8 goals. O'Brien fell to 4-7 while Greenwald improved to 5-8.
 
The Colonels are next in action Saturday when they host Western New England at home with a start time of 12:00 pm. The Fighting Scots will be in action next Wednesday when they face Endicott at home starting at 7:00 pm.
