Scots Flank Colonels with Backdoor Rally

MILTON, Mass. – Trailing by a goal with 10 minutes left to play, Gordon rattled off three unanswered goals to steal a 9-7 win at Curry College. Scoring came at a premium while both teams battled less than ideal playing conditions and Gordon persevered to stage a late rally, including the game-winner by Megan Avery (Rochester, N.H.) with nine minutes to play. The Fighting Scots improve to 7-5 on the season and 3-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, while the host Colonels fall to 5-7 and 1-3 in the CCC.

Junior midfielder Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass.) led all scorers on the night with six points on two goals and four assists for the Scots. Junior midfielder Jessie Castelline (Concord, Mass.) netted four goals and senior attack Abby Illian (Hillsdale, N.J.) added two goals in the victory. Grinnell continued to pile up solid numbers on the ground as well with a team-high six draw controls and five ground balls.

The Scots jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first seven minutes of the game with goals from Grinnell and Castelline. The Colonels responded back with two goals of their own from Alexis Cran and Malorie Knowlton to tie the game at two. With 8:51 remaining in the first half, Gordon took the lead again on a tally from Illian, assisted by sophomore midfielder MC Aston (Greenwich, N.Y.). Curry scored the last two of the half—each coming in a two-minute span—from Knowlton and Brook Harrington to take a 4-3 advantage heading into break.

The Colonels started off the second frame with a net by Knowlton with 25:49 to go to extend the Curry lead to two goals.

Gordon answered with a goal from Illian just 39 seconds later to kick-start a three-goal run. Grinnell and Castelline each scored 26 seconds apart to regain a 6-5 edge with just over 20 minutes to play in regulation.

Kelly Parker and Lauren Carroll each netted a score for the Colonels to give them the 7-6 edge with 16:22 left on the clock. The Scots then went on to tally three unanswered goals, one from Castelline at 10:11, one by senior midfielder Megan Avery at 9:04 and the last from Castelline with just 1:52 left in regulation.  The Colonels had a couple good chances to tie in the waning moments but strong play by Gordon's defense held them scoreless to close it out.

The Colonels senior goalkeeper, Christina Wallis recorded five saves in the loss. Sophomore netminder, Jackie Kiernan (Lexington, Mass.) recorded 11 stops to earn her sixth win of the season.

Sophomore midfielder Knowlton led the Colonels with three goals while junior defenseman Cran added a goal and an assist. Freshman midfielder Harrington, sophomore midfielder Parker and sophomore attack  Carroll each recorded a goal in the loss.

Curry is next in action when they host Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Western New England on Saturday, April 11 at 3:30 pm. The Scots stay on the road this Friday and will visit non-conference opponent M.I.T at 6 p.m.
