Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Controls Vikings in Season Opener

SALEM, Mass.— Caleb Cole (Coatesville, Pa.) scored the only goal of the game and Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.) pitched a shutout as the Fighting Scots of Gordon College (1-0) edged the Vikings of Salem State 1-0 Tuesday night in the season opener for both teams at Alumni Field.

Cole scored in the first minute of play to give the Fighting Scots an early 1-0 lead on an assist from Josh Cochran (Bellville, Ohio). Salem State had an opportunity to tie the match in the 28th minute when Mitch Tepe (Sterling, Mass.) led Ralph Bertrand (Rowley, Mass.) with a deep pass that allowed Bertrand to get a good look at the net.

However, after beating the defender, Bertrand was stopped by goalkeeper Spoonhour , who made a desperation save. Spoonhour wasn't the only goalkeeper making plays as Salem State's Greg Enos (Peabody, Mass.) stoned the Fighting Scots Ian Burkhart (Lancaster, Pa.) in the final minutes of the first half as he stopped two consecutive shots to keep the Vikings' deficit at just one.

Midway through the second half Gordon's Evan Crocker (Akron, Ohio) received a through ball from Cole that split the defenders, leaving Crocker with just the goalie to beat. However, Salem State goaltender Enos cut off all possible angles and made another outstanding save to keep the score at 1-0. Enos continued his stellar play as he closed the door on Burkhart again in the 87th minute.

Enos finished the game with six saves in the loss, while Spoonhour stopped three shots. The Fighting Scots' offense dominated the Vikings, outshooting Salem State 12-6—7-3 on net.

The Vikings play again on September 4th when they host the Panthers of Plymouth State at 7:00 p.m. The Fighting Scots resume action on September 6th when they host New England College at 4:00 p.m.
