Kilgore Runs Away with Pop Crowell Win

Results
WENHAM, Mass.—The University of New England took home a clean sweep of the 44th annual Pop Crowell Invitational with wins in both the men's and women's team events. The Wentworth men split the title with the Nor'easters. UNE's Tiana Thomas (Waterville, Maine) set a blistering pace in the women's 5k before Gordon sophomore Damon Kilgore (Londonderry, N.H.) pulled out a win in front of the home crowd in the 8k event.

The Nor'easter women remained undefeated on the year by taking their third straight meet victory to begin the 2015 season. Despite missing standout runner Brittney Sorbello, the Nor'easters had seven runners cross the line out of the top 10 finishers. They put plenty of distance between themselves and second-place finisher, Gordon, with 18 points.

Gordon's Emily Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) had her best race of the season and took third place overall to lead the Fighting Scots. Gordon's Mariah Geiger (Londonderry, N.H.) and Louisa Dodds (Hillsdale, N.Y.) were the other two non-UNE runners finishing in the top 10.

Maine-Farmington came in third place overall with 109 points and its top runner Laura Pulito finishing just outside of the top 10 in 11th.  Rhode Island College and Emerson College rounded out the top five teams with 110 and 117 points respectively.

In the men's race, Kilgore extended his impressive start to the season by winning his third straight race. The sophomore beat the next best harrier by over a minute, running his best 8k time of the season with a mark of 25:50.

Commonwealth Coast Conference foes from Wentworth, Patrick Hopkins and Alex Robbins, finished second and third in the event. Paul Manigifico and CJ Vallie of UNE rounded out the top five individually.

UNE completed its victory by placing five runners in the top 15, including three in the top 10.  Wentworth's higher volume inside the top five allowed them to tie UNE for the Pop Crowell Invitational crown with 42 total points.

Gordon (80 points), Maine-Farmington (96 points) and the New Hampshire Technology Institute (97 points) made up the rest of the top five teams.

Alex Russell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) garnered a 13th place finish, while Wes Nelson (Charlton, Mass.) came in 20th by a whisker. Dan McCutcheon (Smithfield, R.I.) and Matt Nilan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) also earned top-25 finishes to round out the scoring for the Fighting Scots.
