NEWTON, Mass.—Gordon Men's Soccer continued its winning ways with a 1-0 triumph over the Lasers of Lasell College on Tuesday afternoon. The Scots dominated possession for much of the game, but could only break through the Lasell defense once in their fifth consecutive win.
Junior
Caleb Cole (Coatesville, Pa.) put away the lone goal of the game in the 18
th minute, when he buried a penalty shot to the lower left side of the Lasers' net. Cole earned the free kick in the first place after getting tripped up inside the box while trying to split two defenders.
Gordon continued to test Lasell in its defensive zone, until junior Jonathan Sutton (Orange, Conn.) almost capitalized on the counter attack, firing a shot from midfield that went just wide. The Lasers switched gears and established a pressure in Gordon's offensive third, as senior Jonathan Hislop (Toronto, Ontario) nearly grabbed the equalizer in the 38
th minute, but was denied the point by junior keeper
Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.).
Gordon attempted to flood the Lasers' defensive zone via back to back shots from junior
Aaron Terjanian (West Chester, Pa.) and senior
Evan Crocker (Akron, Ohio), but the Lasers' back line was able to clear the hosts out of trouble. Lasell consistently put eight defenders in the box to frustrate the Scots attack and rarely gave Gordon an uncontested look.
Lasell saw its' last glimpse of hope in the 86
th minute as senior Tyler Davis (Palmer, Mass.) sent in a textbook cross from the right flank, where senior Nick Liquori (Westfield, Mass.) took a blast at the net that was stopped by Spoonhour.
The Fighting Scots outshot the Lasers 20-6 and held an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Lasell senior net minder Miguel Colmenares (Caracas, Venezuela) drops to 1-6 overall, and stopped nine of 10 shots faced on net, while Spoonhour recorded two saves on the day and improves to 7-2 this year.
Both teams jump back into conference action on Saturday, October 3. The Lasers are on the road to Providence, R.I. for a 2:30 p.m. GNAC battle, while the Fighting Scots hosts Curry College at 3:00 p.m. as a part of their homecoming weekend.
