BROCKPORT, N.Y—Gordon Volleyball split a pair of matches on the final day of the Brockport Invitational, including a win in its final match of the tournament against Houghton.
Gordon's gauntlet of matches continued on day two of the Brockport Invitational with a four-set loss to Penn State-Behrend during the morning session. The Scots endured two closes losses in the first three sets before the Lions pulled way in the fourth game.
Behrend was able to dictate some momentum at the beginning of the match with a powerful offensive effort. Nineteen of the Lions' 25 points in the game came from kills, as Gordon was unable to slow them down early. Still, the Scots found themselves down only one point late in the first, but Behrend won four of the final five points to take the opener.
The second set followed a similar back-and-forth format, but again Behrend had enough to take a 25-23 victory to bring them to the brink of victory. Gordon improved its consistency in the third set, but once again found themselves in a battle from point to point. The Scots held a slight lead with only points to play, but finally broke the Lions for a 25-21 win.
Behrend halted Gordon's progress in the final set by quickly building a double-digit lead. Gordon was never able to recover and fell in four.
As they were on Friday,
Jenna Labbadia (Berlin, Conn.),
Mackenzie Hinds (Higganum, Conn.) and
Carleigh Petersen (North Hills, Calif.) led the charge in kills with 11, 10 and nine apiece. Freshman setter
Renee Cooprider (Hopkinton, Mass.) put up a career-high 39 assists and
Maggie Risma (Hudson, Ohio) paced the defense with 21 digs.
In its final match, Gordon continued its string of close matchups. After three matches that could have flipped the other way for the Fighting Scots, they seemed ready to break through for a win. Victory was going to be far from easy against an evenly matched Highlanders squad.
The first set did not disappoint with neither team leading by more than three points through the duration. Petersen put up five kills in the first set, including two in crunch time while Gordon was facing a loss in the game. The Highlanders put together a run to take a 24-22 lead, but the Scots won the final four points to steal the game away.
Gordon fell behind 7-2 in the second set, but showed plenty of resolve to eventually take a 14-10 lead. The Scots lead ballooned to 24-18 and they were able to hold off a late rally to notch a 25-22 second set win.
Houghton controlled the entire third set and had a chance to even things in the fourth when Hinds and Petersen came through again. The two outside hitters combined for four kills when Houghton had a set point and Gordon was able to win enough tough points to pull out the four-setter, 28-26.
Petersen and Hinds combined for 29 kills, while Renee Cooprider set up 46 balls. Risma,
Krystal Vander Ark (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and the Cooprider sisters, Renee and
Kristen, each had double-digit digs. Risma led the way with 25.
Gordon returns home on Tuesday to take on regional power MIT at the Bennett Center.
