CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Three goals in the second half gave the MIT field hockey team the cushion it needed as it went on to defeat Gordon College, 4-0, in a non-conference tilt on Tuesday night. Four different players found the back of the net for the Engineers, who improved to 3-1 on the year. The Fighting Scots, meanwhile, saw their ledger lower to 1-2 for the season.
MIT controlled the action for the majority of the first half as it recorded 10 penalty corners and 11 shots on goal. The Engineers eventually broke through in the 27th minute when junior Krishna Jaitly (Bethesda, Md.) knocked in the rebound of sophomore Emily Penn's (Elkridge, Md.) saved shot. Gordon's best opportunity of the frame occurred on a close-range shot by sophomore
Emily Allcroft (Haydenville, Mass.) that was blocked by a defender in the 21st minute.
In the first five minutes following the halftime break the Fighting Scots pressured the hosts' backline by tallying a penalty corner and three shots, one of which was on goal. MIT responded with an offensive charge of its own that resulted in it building a 2-0 lead in the 45th minute. On a penalty corner, freshman Bailey Tregoning (Frederick, Md.) inserted the ball to senior Molly McNamara (Auburn, Mass.) who found classmate Siobhan Rigby (Richmond, Va.) for the marker.
The game became a back-and-forth affair during the next 10 minutes before the Engineers increased their margin. While leading a breakaway, Tregoning found junior Morgan O'Brien (Croton, Md.) on the far post who quickly knocked the ball into the back of the cage. The Cardinal and Gray capped the scoring with just over nine minutes left to play when Penn tapped in the rebound of her previously saved shot. Despite facing a four-goal deficit, Gordon nearly ended the shutout down the stretch as it generated five shots on goal and a penalty corner.
In net for MIT senior Evie Kyritsis (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) registered seven saves. Junior
Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) amassed 14 saves in 62 minutes of action while freshman
Anastasia Landman (Cheswick, Pa.) closed out the game with three stops for the Fighting Scots. Senior
Lydia Ellsworth (West Chester, Pa.) also helped keep the Engineers off the board as she earned a defensive save early in the second half.
Both squads will face Nichols College in their next outing. MIT will travel to the Bison on Thursday, Sept. 10 while Gordon will host its Commonwealth Coast Conference foe on Wednesday, Sept. 16.
