Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

UNE Powers Past Women's Basketball

WENHAM, Mass.—The University of New England shook off a relatively quiet first half with 49 points over the final 20 minutes to steam past host Gordon 78-40. All 10 Nor'easters who played scored at least four points, while holding the Fighting Scots to just 18 points in the second half.

The Nor'easters improve to 6-3 and 3-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference while snapping a two-game losing streak. Gordon drops to 4-7 this season and 0-4 in league play.

Shots did not drop for the Nor'easters in the early going, while Gordon attacked as the aggressors over the first few minutes. Gordon held a slight 11-8 advantage after seven minutes as freshman Jamie Tafoya (Fort Collins, Colo.) scored seven points during that stretch.

However, UNE's full court press began to cause serious issues for the Fighting Scots towards the end of the first quarter. The Nor'easters used the turnover creating to end the period on a 9-1 run and carried it over into the second quarter.

UNE pulled ahead by 12 points at 29-17 with 2:22 remaining in the first half, but Gordon ended the period with a 5-0 run to close to gap to single digits entering intermission.

Gordon kicked off the second half with a made three from freshman Jess Ryan (Milford, N.H.) to creep even closer at 29-25, but the shot sparked a big run by the Nor'easters to put the game away. UNE's explosive offense scored 17 straight points in less than four minutes to quickly put the Scots down by 21.

The hosts would never recover from the run and fell to the previously nationally ranked Nor'easters by a wide margin. Gordon will look to rebound on Thursday at Salve Regina at 5:30 p.m. UNE hopes to keep its undefeated CCC record when it travels to Milton, Mass. on Thursday evening.
