WENHAM, Mass.—UNE senior Taylor Littlefield (Sanford, Maine) was the hero for the Nor'easters, scoring two goals in the first half to spoil Gordon's Homecoming game 2-0. The Nor'easters controlled the momentum for much of the match, outshooting the Scots 28-6 and held up against some late chances to pitch the shutout on a soggy Gordon Quad.
The Fighting Scots entered the matchup having been a thorn in the side of the Nor'easters in recent years, winning the last six games dating back to the 2011 season. It was also the Fighting Scots who had pulled off upsets in the last two Commonwealth Coast Conference playoffs to knock UNE out of the first round.
However, the Nor'easters enacted some revenge with a relentless offensive attack from beginning to end. UNE put 20 of its 28 shots on the frame, putting freshman keeper Kali Denty (Marshfield, Mass.) into a variety of tough spots. Denty was able to come up with 18 saves on the day, a career-high, but UNE was able to capitalize on two moments during the first 45 minutes.
The two teams played to a 0-0 draw through 33 minutes when back-to-back corners earned by the visitors ended up with a score. Edie Pallozzi (Windham, Maine) sent the corner out wide to Brianna Cota (Hampden, Maine) at the top of the 18. Cota took a touch and fired a shot at the net. Denty looked to have a beat on the attempt, but Littlefield redirected the shot with her toe at the last minute to send it into the net.
Littlefield kept the momentum going just three minutes later when she found some space from 30 yards out on a pass back from Katie Beaudoin (Coventry, R.I.). Littlefield analyzed her options before sending a perfect ball over the top of the defense and just out of reach of Denty for her sixth goal of the season.
UNE kept the pressure up in the second half, but Denty made a handful of difficult stops to keep Gordon's comeback hopes in place. Ultimately, the Nor'easters were able to post the shutout behind two saves by Brielle Robinson (Monson, Mass.), who completed a clean sheet for the fifth time in 2016.
Gordon (4-4-1) will look to rebound on Tuesday when they host Salem State on the Brigham turf for a 7 p.m. start. UNE (7-2) travels to Colby on Wednesday for its second NESCAC matchup in three games.
