WENHAM, Mass.—A goal early in the second half was the difference as visiting Castleton took a 1-0 result from Gordon on Wednesday afternoon on the Quad. Gordon drops its second straight non-conference of the week, falling to 6-6-1 overall. Castleton gets back to the .500 mark with a 6-6-3 record on the season.
The first half played quite even with most of the possession happening between the 18-yard boxes. Each team had a pair of good looks at net, but both keepers came up with stops in those moments.
Gordon pressured hard in its offensive zone to start the second half and it provided a good chance almost instantly when Ashton Barkey (Parker, Colo.) earned an open look. Barkey passed a ball by the approaching keeper, but it went just outside of the right post to keep things all square.
Just a few minutes later, Castleton struck for the first goal of the contest after possessing a turnover at midfield committed by the Fighting Scots. Shelby McLenithan (Bennington, Vt.) used her speed to get down the left flank before putting a ball toward the center of the Gordon defense. A Scot defender tried to get the ball out of danger, but the touch went spinning backwards to give Bronwen Hopwood (Hinesburg, Vt.) a chance to run onto it for a finish.
Gordon put together a pair of chances in the late stages of the game, including a dangerous free kick just outside of the box that was deflected away from trouble. A through ball to Lexi Potter (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) gave the Scots a final chance at the equalizer, but the shot sailed just over the crossbar.
Gordon continues its three-match home stand when they host Wentworth on Saturday afternoon.
