Late Goal Clinches Win over Bison

WENHAM, Mass.--Junior Emily Allcroft (Haydenville, Mass.) broke a 1-1 tie with just over a minute in regulation to send Gordon to an important win over visiting Nichols on Saturday afternoon. The Bison had tied the game just a minute earlier, but Gordon went back down the field and scored to pull off the 2-1 victory.

The Fighting Scots improve to 6-8 overall and 3-6 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, while the Bison drop to 1-14 and 0-9 respectively.

After an early shot for the Bison to begin the game, Gordon controlled the pace for the remainder of the first half. The Fighting Scots outshot their opponents 10-1 over the first 35 minutes, including seven on frame. However, rookie keeper Brooke Misbach (Guilford, Conn.) played extremely well for the Bison, including making a tough stick save on a high ball off a penalty corner.

Gordon's offense persisted into the second half and finally came away with their first strike of the game in the 49th minute. Karli-An Gilbert (Scarborough, Maine) put home her first goal of the season after following in a rebound. Gilbert was left unmanned after gathering an attempted clear, allowing the senior to wind up and launch a shot straight to the back of the goal on the left side.

Nichols' defense continued to hold steady despite the onslaught of shots by the Fighting Scots and a quick countered late in regulation gave them a chance at the tie. Amy McDonnell (Newbury, Mass.) sent a nice ball into the fray from the right side, where it found the stick of Erin Jillson (New Salem, Mass.). Jillson curled her stick and sent a looping shot into the top right corner of the net for the equalizer.

Gordon stormed down the field off of the next tip and eventually found gold for a second time. Much like the first goal, a Gordon attacker was left open at the top of the key. Allcroft sent a low ball that was saved and kicked back out to her, but the second chance was higher and just over Misbach's glove.

The Fighting Scots were able to bleed out the final few minutes of the clock to hold on for the narrow CCC win.

Gordon held a 24-4 shot advantage in the game. Misbach made 12 saves, while Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) stopped two attempts.

The Scots' conference schedule continues on Tuesday when they make the long trek down to Newport to take on Salve Regina in a match with major playoff implications. Nichols closes out its non-conference slate on the same day with a trip to Framingham State.
