WENHAM, Mass.—Wentworth Men's Soccer capitalized on two moments in the first half and held on for a 3-1 win over Gordon on Saturday afternoon. The Leopards spoiled the Fighting Scots Senior Day festivities with a pair of early scores and held Gordon's attack in check for a majority of the day to take sole possession of the Commonwealth Coast Conference lead.
Heading into the day, both teams sat tied with a 4-0-1 record in the CCC and dates with Endicott looming. The Leopards finished off more opportunities to improve to 5-0-1 in the conference and 9-2-4 overall.
Gordon's tough week continued, dropping its second straight after flirting with the national rankings on Tuesday. The Fighting Scots now sit at 4-1-1 in conference and 9-3-1 overall, while no longer controlling their destiny for home field advantage in the upcoming conference tourney.
For the third straight half, Gordon gave up a goal in the opening 10 minutes of the period to dig themselves an early hole. Matt Cicalis (Bridgewater, Mass.) finished off a feed from Michael Zendan (Charlotte, N.C.), sending in a strong header to beat
Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.) in the eighth minute.
Gordon looked ready to tie the game in the 14
th minute with a pair of good chances.
Josh Beveridge (Anchorage, Alaska) fired a ball that was tipped away by Joe Schallmo (Norwood, Mass.), but landed back in the six-yard box.
Matt Chartier (Concord, N.H.) one-timed the rebound in what looked like a sure-fire goal, but it was knocked away by a Wentworth defender to keep the game 1-0.
The Fighting Scots held a shot advantage in the first half, but it was Wentworth who put the second goal of the half on the scoreboard. Directly off of a Gordon foul deep in its own territory, Joe Kalil (Franklin, Mass.) headed in a service from Emmett Basaca (San Diego, Calif.) at the back post. Spoonhour was unable to get all the way back and it caromed into the net for the 2-0 lead.
Gordon answered quickly, scoring fewer than two minutes later with just a few moments remaining in the opening period.
Mark Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio) lobbed a beautiful ball over the top of the defense, allowing fellow rookie
Michael Cuocci (Baltimore, Md.) to run onto the ball. The midfielder passed the oncoming keeper and kissed the ball into the net to make it 2-1 before the break.
Wentworth came out even more aggressive in the second half and put the Scots comeback chances in deep trouble with another beautiful goal in the 57
th minute. CCC point leader Noah Martins (Dartmouth, Mass.) flashed his skills with a nice ball inside the post, off a pass from Cicalis.
Gordon's offense never really got going in the second half and did not force Schallmo into a save over the final 45 minutes.
Gordon will look to avoid its first three-game losing streak in four seasons when they travel to Newport on Tuesday to take on Salve Regina. The Leopards host Eastern Nazarene on Wednesday before another big showdown with Endicott next Saturday.
Caleb Cole (Coatesville, Pa.) did not put a point in the scoresheet for only the second time on the season. Gordon dropped its second consecutive game for just the second time under the coaching regime. The Fighting Scots lost back-to-back games to Calvin and Western New England in 2015 before rebounding for the CCC title.
