WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Men's Soccer scored twice in each half to complete a 4-0 result at home against sixth-seeded Nichols in the quarterfinal round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament. Josh Cochran (Bellville, Ohio) scored two goals off headers as Gordon always felt in control of the four-goal victory. The Fighting Scots advance to play No. 2 Wentworth on Wednesday night in Boston.
While the Bison actually outshot the Fighting Scots in the opening period, Gordon's chances had more quality to them. A dangerous foul in the 17th minute set up Caleb Cole (Coatesville, Pa.) for a free kick. The CCC Offensive Player of the Year obliged with a perfect curling ball over the top of the defense, where it met the forehead of a wide open Cochran to put the Scots up 1-0.
Gordon added to its lead in the 26th minute when Ian Burkhart (Lancaster, Pa.) sent a low drive into the low left corner of goal. Burkhart settled a pass from Josh Beveridge (Anchorage, Alaska) atop the 18 and turned around before firing a quick shot past the screened keeper.
Josh Spoonhour (Greencastle, Pa.) had two saves in the first half, his only two of the game.
The sloppy second half ensued with both teams spending a majority of their time in the middle third of the field.
Nichols had a pair of good looks to cut the deficit to one goal, but both opportunities went wide of the post.
Cole increased the Scot lead to three goals in the 83rd minute by running on to a head from Cochran in the open field. With no one to beat but the keeper, Cole sent a line drive into the right pocket for the goal. Gordon's offense finished off a fine game with another goal exactly a minute later. For the second time during the contest, Cochran ran onto a free kick and contorted his body to get a header past the diving keeper. Burkhart was credited with the assist on the deep ball.
Gordon held a 13-11 lead in shots, but only two of Nichols attempts were between the pipes compared to seven for the Scots.
The Fighting Scots (12-4-1) will have to be sharp in a rematch with the Leopards on Wednesday after Wentworth handed Gordon its worst defeat of the season, 3-1. Nichols closes its season at even, 8-8-1.
