WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon Volleyball stayed unbeaten in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with a three-set sweep of visiting UNE on Wednesday afternoon at the Bennett Center. The Fighting Scots displayed its most consistent all-around effort on the season, minimizing mistakes and finding holes in the Nor'easter defense to beat their conference foes 25-9, 25-11, 25-23.
The first set was all about long Gordon runs spurred on by a mix of solid serving and UNE miscues. The Fighting Scots won the race to 15 points, leading 15-6 at the time, and never relinquished control in a 25-9 trumping. Gordon totaled six service aces in the opening set, while the Nor'easters hit seven attack errors to only five kills.
Gordon's attack remained sharp in the second set, but they had to battle through some quality points on both side in the early going. The Fighting Scots held a slim 9-7 lead when they went on a 9-0 run off the serving of Maggie Risma (Hudson, Ohio), as senior libero picked up three more aces during the streak. UNE closed the gap back to single digits, but Gordon won the final five points of the set to take a commanding lead.
The Nor'easters reset for the third set and looked more comfortable in all facets. Seniors Erika Sawicki (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Grayson Szczepaniak (Lakewood, Ohio) helped the visitors to an 8-4 advantage. A see saw battle ensued with Gordon never getting the chance to turn over the lead in its favor and UNE controlled the set at 23-21 with only a few points to go.
Gordon called a timeout to stop the UNE momentum temporarily and it worked, as Meghan Hokanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Mackenzie Hinds (Higganum, Conn.) each came up with a big kill. The Nor'easters called a timeout with the game at 23 a side, but two more kills by Hinds sealed a thrilling final set.
Rene Roggenbuck (Goffstown, N.H.) had the best night on the attack for the Nor'easters with five kills and a .095 hitting percentage. Kristen Falcinelli (Silver Spring, Md.) set up 16 kills on the day, while libero Brittany Morrison (Rosemount, Minn.) paced the team's defensive unit with 14 digs.
Gordon's three-headed attack of Hinds, Hokanson and Carleigh Petersen (North Hills, Calif.) combined for 21 kills compared to only six errors. Hinds led the team with six aces, while Risma pitched in four of her own. Renee Cooprider (Hopkinton, Mass.) helped the Gordon offense with 22 assists.
The Fighting Scots had their third highest ace total of the season with 13 on the evening.
Gordon (10-7, 4-0 CCC) hosts a tough tri-match on Saturday with Roger Williams and Framingham State. UNE (9-7, 2-2 CCC) will play Southern Maine for the second time this season, this time at home in Biddeford, also on Saturday.
