Golden Bears Knock Scots from Quarters

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—In a rematch of Saturday's volleyball thriller, Gordon fell to third-seeded Western New England in three sets on Tuesday evening in the quarterfinals of the Commonwealth Coast Conference playoffs. The Golden Bears never allowed the Fighting Scots to get their offense going, besting the six seed 25-18, 25-18, 25-12.

In the season finale, Gordon fell to the Golden Bears in five sets by the slimmest margin possible after coming close to taking the match outright. Tuesday was a different story however, as Western New England flexed its muscles up front.

The Fighting Scots got out to a good start with a solid 10-7 start in the opening set, but the Golden Bears responded with an 8-1 run to turn the tables on the match. Gordon was able to claw back to a two-point deficit, but would not get any closer in the seven-point loss.

The two teams battled out to an 11-11 tie in the second set as Gordon looked to even the score at one game apiece. However, the home side put together a handful of small runs to get enough distance between the two teams for another 25-18 win.

Up two games, Western New England ran away with things in the third. The Golden Bears scored the first eight points of the set and led 11-1 before Gordon was able to attempt to chip away. Gordon was able to go on a four-point run to close things to six, but WNE went on another run of their own to keep the Scots from getting any ideas of a comeback.

Mackenzie Hinds (Higganum, Conn.) led the Scots with seven kills and a .182 hitting percentage. Maggie Risma (Hudson, Ohio) had a team-high 18 digs in the three-setter. Renee Cooprider (Hopkinton, Mass.) finished with 18 assists.

The Scots close out their season at 13-15.
