MILTON, Mass.—Gordon Men's Basketball used a 10-0 run over the final 90 second of regulation to pull off a 76-71 comeback at Curry on Tuesday night. The Fighting Scots struggled to find any consistent offense for most of the night, but received big shots from
Eric Demers (Aschunet, Mass.) down the stretch to avoid a letdown against the Colonels in Commonwealth Coast Conference play.
Things looked bleak for the Fighting Scots for a majority of the contest, as the team struggled to put any significant runs together. Gordon jumped out to a 7-2 lead over the opening three minutes of the first half, but only scored one point in the next nine minutes of gameplay as Curry responded to take a 21-8 lead.
Playing in just his second game of the season, Demers did his best to keep the Scots within striking distance. The sophomore scored 11 points in the first half and contributed two of Gordon's three made triples. Senior
Sam Johnson (Chatham, Mass.) kept up his solid work in the post with 11 points and 10 boards in the first as well.
However, Gordon hurt its own chances at making runs with 15 first-half turnovers, including 13 in the first 10 minutes of the half.
As they have for much of the season, Gordon awoke in the second half with a more consistent effort in all facets of the game. The Fighting Scots only turned the ball over five times in the final period and started to get hot from deep in the last quarter of game time.
Still, Curry managed to expand its advantage to 15 points at 58-43 with 11:50 remaining on the clock when Gordon finally made its patented move. The Fighting Scots scored 13 consecutive points in a four-minute span with Demers,
Noah Szilagyi (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and
Dylan Marshall (Purcellville, Va) all hitting key threes to spark the Gordon alive from the brink.
The Colonels managed to keep the Scots from getting closer and held a two-possession lead with 1:25 to go in the second.
Coming out of a timeout, Demers drained a three to make it a 71-69 game before
Jaren Yang (San Francisco, Calif.) was able to steal in impending inbounds pass. Demers drew a foul on that possession and sank both pressure free throws to tie the game for the first time.
Curry had two looks at the bucket to go back ahead, but Johnson grabbed a long rebound and handed it to Yang to start a transition look.
Garrisson Duvivier (Brockton, Mass.) snuck behind the Curry defense on the transition and Yang hit him in stride with a slicing pass for an easy layup and a 73-71 lead. Gordon's first since 7-5.
The Colonels turned things over again in the waning moments and Yang was able to put things out of reach with a pair of made free throws. Gordon went 18-of-22 from the charity stripe in the second half, capitalizing on Curry's foul trouble.
Demers led the Scots in scoring for the second straight game, scoring a season-high 27 points on 50-percent shooting. He made half of Gordon's eight threes on the day and missed only one of 10 free throws. Johnson kept his double-double streak alive, pushing it to nine games, with 13 points and 19 rebounds. Duvivier just missed out on his third in a row with 18 points and nine boards. Yang did not total 10 or more points in a game for the first time this season, but dished out a team-high four dimes and was perfect at the line.
Gordon pushed up its overall rebound margin slightly, besting the Colonels 45-29.
Four Colonels scored in double-figures with Jordan Bellitti, James Pina and Paul Preziosi each putting up 15 points. Jaelen Bellitti had 12.
The Fighting Scots (5-2, 3-0 CCC) remain on the road this Thursday when they head to Worcester to take on the Lancers of Worcester State. Curry (0-7, 0-3 CCC) is off until Saturday when they face Emerson in Boston.
Of Note:
- Gordon started 3-0 in the CCC for the first time since 2011-12 when the Scots started 5-0 in the conference.
- The Fighting Scots have won three games this season when they've trailed by 10 points or more.
