MILTON, Mass.—For the first time in 2016, Gordon Women's Basketball took a game from cover-to-cover in a 68-52 win at Curry on Tuesday evening. The Fighting Scots took the Colonels by surprising with a dominant first quarter and never looked back on their way to their second Commonwealth Coast Conference victory in three tries this year.
Gordon suddenly finds themselves near the top of the CCC standings at 2-1 in the conference and 3-4 overall. The Colonels drop their third straight in the conference to begin the year and are 2-7 overall on the season.
The Fighting Scots blitzed the host team from the very beginning, storming out to an 11-0 lead before the Colonels could respond with a bucket of their own. Gordon made four of its first six attempts from behind the arch with a trio of underclassman doing a majority of the damage from distance.
Olivia Stark (Arvada, Colo.),
Meghan Foley (Malden, Mass.) and
Alisha Henderson (Oregon City, Ore.) all put up five points in the opening quarter as Gordon grabbed a 20-6 advantage after 10 minutes.
Gordon ballooned its lead to 20 points with under five minutes to go in the second quarter when Curry made a big run to put some pressure on the Scots. However, after a 9-0 run by the Colonels to close the gap to 11, Gordon scored the final four points of the half to take a 34-19 halftime lead.
Curry was able to cut its deficit to single digits on multiple occasions in the second half, but never got closer than seven points for the remainder of regulation. Gordon's strong fourth quarter helped them close out the win.
A balanced effort on offense paced the Fighting Scots to their largest win of the season to date. Foley was back to her efficient self with 15 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals. It's her second double-double of the year after getting one in her collegiate debut. Stark had all 10 of her points in the first half, while four others had at least seven points on the evening.
Gordon outrebounded an opponent for the first time this season and it made a difference in the final box score. The Scots corralled 42 compared to 30 for the Colonels.
Jenna Olson (Rutland, Vt.) had a team-high 12 rebounds and kept several possessions alive with timely offensive rebounds.
The Scots did commit a season-high 31 turnovers, but forced enough on the other to ensure the hosts could not stage a full comeback in the second half.
The Scots head back out of conference play when they host Emerson at the Bennett Center on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
