Scots Drop Last-Second Heartbreaker to Leopards

WENHAM, Mass.—Kyle Romich (Groton, Mass.) hit a fadeaway from the elbow with 4.9 seconds left to send Wentworth to a 69-67 win over the Fighting Scots on Wednesday evening. Wentworth fought off a two-possession deficit in the closing minutes and forced the Scots into a few costly mistakes to take their fifth consecutive win over Gordon.

The Leopards blitzed the Scots out of the gate, running to a 30-17 lead after 13 minutes and change. Wentworth seemed nearly unstoppable on offense with the combination of Jason Ganley (Northbridge, Mass.) and Romich forcing the Scots to guard outside the paint.

Wentworth held a comfortable 34-23 lead with 3:12 on the clock in the first when a dunk by Garrisson Duvivier (Brockton, Mass.) brought the Gordon offense back to life. The Fighting Scots scored 11 consecutive points to end the period, capped by back-to-back strong lay-ins by the freshman Duvivier.

The second half yielded a more back-and-forth game with seven lead changes in the first seven minutes of the period. However, a run of threes by Sam Knollmeyer (Hampton, N.H.) quickly opened a nine-point hole for the Fighting Scots.

Not to be outdone, Gordon scored nine straight to tie the game at 55 and eventually took the lead on a Sam Johnson (Chatham, Mass.) layup with 6:03 to go.

Gordon held a four-point lead with two minutes remaining on the clock when a flurry of mistakes altered the game in Wentworth's favor. The Leopards scored off a turnover and then a made three by Dan DeVaux (Wethersfield, Conn.) following a poor offensive set by the Scots. Wentworth's four-point deficit was turned into a one-point lead in less time than that of a shot clock.

Richie Armand (Hempstead, N.Y.) made the front end of two free throws to tie the game at 67, but Romich answered on the other end to put the Leopards ahead for good. Eric Demers' (W. Wareham, Mass.) attempt from just inside half court rimmed out as time expired.
