Scots Bats Stay Hot in Frigid Temps

WENHAM, Mass.—Gordon starter Matt Amore (Pequannock, N.J.) stuck out 11 batters over six innings of work and gave up no earned runs to help the Scots beat visiting Massachusetts Maritime 5-3 at J. Tec White Field on Thursday. The Fighting Scots ran their win streak to four games, as Amore picked up his fourth win of the young season.

The Scots improve to 8-5 with the victory and remain unbeaten in their home state since returning from their Florida trip. The Buccaneers dip one game below .500 at 5-6.

Amore was able to pitch himself out of trouble spots in each of the first three innings. The junior starter put runners on base with a walk and a hit batter in the first inning, but managed to strikeout the other three batters he faced to work out of the jam. Amore hit another batter in the second, but worked the corners once again to notch two more punch-outs and kept the Bucs off the scoreboard.

Gordon broke through in the bottom half of the second to take an early 2-0 advantage. A costly error put a Gordon base runner on with only one out in the inning and the Fighting Scots made the best of the opportunity. Matt Moffat (Stratford, Conn.) hit a bloop single in front of the feet of the right fielder and Ryan Paulsen (Latham, N.Y.) brought in both runners to score with a double to the wall in right center.

Amore had to labor through the top of the fourth inning with the first two Bucs getting on base with singles. The Gordon starter was able to power a pitch for a swinging strikeout, but the ball bounced in the dirt to advance both runners into scoring position. However, back-to-back groundouts got the Scots out of the inning without giving up a run.

Sophomore catcher Travis Benoit (Worcester, Mass.) added to the Gordon lead in the bottom of the fourth with a long ball down the line in left field. The Fighting Scots continued to load the bases, but left them juiced with a strikeout to end the inning.

The fifth inning allowed the Bucs to capitalize on a series of Gordon defensive miscues. Amore led off the frame by catching the leadoff batter looking, but the Bucs quickly countered with a double by Everett Walsh (Marstons Mills, Mass.). Walsh advanced to third on the next play, an error at third, to put runners on the corners and only one out.

Another Gordon error led to Walsh scoring from third base to make it a 3-1 game and the Bucs brought it all the way back to a tie game with a two-RBI single to right by Paul Sances (Middleboro, Mass.).

The Fighting Scots regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with two more runs crossing home plate. Benoit led of the inning with a single into center, but was eventually picked off third after being ushered there by a sacrifice bunt and a single by Paulsen.

Gordon was able to put two runners on base with a walk and an error at third, scoring Paulsen in the process. Addison Tarr (Oxnard, Calif.) hit a quirky single off the mound and snuck under the sliding runner at second, allowing Christian Hodge (Waltham, Mass.) to come around for the fifth run.

The Bucs best chance at completing a comeback came in the top of the eighth inning. Reliever Caleb Bae (Canyon Country, Calif.) got the first two hitters to ground out for easy plays, but Bae hit the third batter of the inning to keep it alive. Walsh singled for his third hit of the game, but Bae was able to get a fly out to Tarr to end the threat.

For the Bucs
  • Walsh and Sances delivered most of the offense for the Bucs with three hits apiece. Sances, the MMA second baseman, also drove in two of the team's three runs.
  • Four Bucs were given bases due to being hit.
  • Senior Kyle Kennedy (Woodbury, Conn.) was charged for his first loss of the season despite not giving up an earned run in three innings of relief.

For the Scots
  • Benoit finished a triple shy of the cycle and drove in a run on his solo shot.
  • The back half of the Gordon lineup excelled as its five thru eight hitters contributed nine of the team's 11 hits in the game.
  • Bae earned the first save of the year for the Scots in three innings of work.

Quick Hits
  • Only one of the eight runs scored in the game was earned.
  • Amore and Scott Hall (Weymouth, Mass.) are the top two strikeout leaders in the Commonwealth Coast Conference entering league play next week.
