WENHAM, Mass.— Four goals from junior Andrew Myhre (Middlebury, Vt.) led Clark University to an 11-5 win over the Fighting Scots of Gordon College in men's lacrosse on Saturday. The Cougars held Gordon scoreless in the first and last periods while scoring six goals of their own to make up the difference in the game.
Gordon drops its fourth straight game to begin the 2016 campaign, while Clark improves to 2-0. The Scots travel to Babson on Wednesday to take on the Beavers at 4 p.m. The Cougars head south to Florida for games against DeSales and Cazenovia over the next five days.
The Fighting Scots fell behind early as John Goracy (Lumberton, N.J.) put the Cougars on the board less than two minutes into regulation. Myhre added two strikes of his own in the sixth and eight minutes of the game, including a man-up goal on a feed from Nick Johnson (Amherst, Mass.) to put Clark up by three.
The Cougars became the first team to shut Gordon out in a quarter this spring and held a 4-0 advantage after 15 minutes.
Freshman
Austin Early (Palmyra, Va.) got Gordon on the board mere seconds into the second quarter. However, Johnson and Will Mandracchia (Melrose, Mass.) extended the Clark lead to 6-1 approaching the final minutes of the first half.
Early added his third goal of the year and fellow rookie
Nick Tozier (Winston Salem, N.C.) scored his first collegiate goal to cut the deficit in half.
Clark ruined any resemblance of momentum for the Fighting Scots when Rob Holden (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) hit the twine with just three ticks in the first half.
Gordon closed the gap back to three goals in the third quarter, but Myhre scored a goal in each of the final two quarters to keep the Scots from creeping any closer. Mandracchia and Goracy both added their second goals of the game to finish the Scots out for good.
For the Foes- Myhre scored four goals after being held scoreless in the team's opening win against UMass-Dartmouth.
- Mandracchia and Goracy both had two-goal performances.
- Will Roberts (Paxton, Mass.) and Mandracchia led the Cougars' groundball attack with six apiece.
- Drew Riopelle-Tyrrell (Northville, Mich.) made 10 saves for Clark and notched his second win of the season between the pipes.
For the Scots- Tozier and Early led Gordon's scoring with two goals each. Roger Evans (Oxford, Pa.) had one to extend his scoring streak.
- Peter Kovacevic (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won 13 of 18 face offs and grabbed 11 groundballs, but Gordon was unable to turn them into scoring chances.
- Gordon outshot Clark 39-36 for the game, but the Cougars held a large 26-15 advantage in shots on frame.
- Cody Greenwald (Albany, N.Y.) made 15 saves in the loss.
